For #StandingStoneSunday, here's Monteneuf. Just some of the hundreds of megalithic in this forested region of Brittany.

“The stones hath fallen a sacrifice to the wretched ignorance and avarice of a little village, unluckily plac'd within it.”

William Stukeley’s (1687-1765) observation on the destruction of Avebury, between 1719-1724.

I’m always reminded of the 6 inch Stone Henge in the first Spinal Tap film when I pass the real thing on the A303. Somehow, for such a significant site, it can feel quite small. And at the same time, I awed by its beauty and mystery and the fact that it remains - 6000 years on

The Long Neolithic lives as call to mystery, call to wonder. Whether we respond to those calls as archaeologists, ley hunters or stone pilgrims – we respond with stories. The Long Neolithic tithes in narrative. With typology or folklore, we all pay our dues. – Dr. K. Brophy #StandingStoneSunday

“Did they sacrifice to God here?" asked Tess.
"No," said Angel.
"Who to?"
"I believe to the sun. That lofty stone set away by itself is in the direction of the sun, which will presently rise behind it."

Just one of the beauties from the Ring of Brodgar on Mainland, Orkney for #StandingStoneSunday. The strip of heath behind is the deep, rock-cut surrounding ditch. #WorldHeritage

I recall noticing it years ago, might even have taken a snap, past it again recently. It's by the Shinagag~Blair Atholl (estate) road. The SS has been recorded (www.trove.scot/activities/1206564). Oddly not marked on any early maps 🧐 ?? 📷 mine.

Kerpenhir menhir, aka Menhir de Bob Saes, nr #Locmariaquer #Morbihan #Brittany #France (2022)

🏺

Ollie, a middle-aged bearded white man in a dark hat and a pale floral shirt, leans against a large, chunky standing stone. He's looking out across the Gulf of Morbihan but you can't tell that from the picture. The stone is surrounded by rough scrubby land.

This stone is very different depending on which angle you look at it from.

The grand Nine Maidens stone row. Every stone is a geological wonder, each a mini ecosystem of lichens and moss.

Stanton Drew, Somerset, Sept. 2026. Three circles are present at Stanton Drew (including the Great Circle, the second largest in UK). Nearby, The Cove is handily located in the beer garden of The Druid’s Arms. #StandingStoneSunday #Somerset #StantonDrew @stoneclub.bsky.social @megalithic.bsky.social

Looking towards the Great Circle from the North-East Circle. In the foreground is one of the standing stones of the North-East Circle at Stanton Drew with some of the stones of the, 113m diameter, Great Circle visible in the background. The North-East Circle showing several standing stones, some having fallen. The Cove in the garden of The Druid’s Arms behind the church. Three stones can be seen, two of which are still standing. Pub benches and trees are present in the background. The Druid’s Arms, Stanton Drew, Somerset. A bench and tables are situated outside. The pub sign displays an image of The Cove.
