This is what happened when I built a pedal-powered RV this summer:
Dude redoing the pavement outside my house just pulled his phone out to take my number and I was like WHOA WHAT THE HELL IS THAT because it was I kid you not three times thicker than any phone I've seen in the last ten years, it has a camping light, he charges it twice a week and it doesn't mind […]
@ifixcoinops ...I won't deny I'm tempted.
The new sight glass fits! Unfortunately, I just noticed there is a bearing needed for mounting the turret head that did not come with my box of parts, so now I have to wait for a replacement for that.
This is the second project like this with a shockingly high refresh rate I've seen recently. So has epaper always been capable of this, and capitalism utterly failed to take advantage of it? Or are hobbyists just the first to explore some recent improvement in the technology? Because I've been […]
@enobacon It's been amazing feeling the difference over just the last few years as Seattle has finally started to hit some real network effects in our trail system.
@younata You are DEFINITELY on the right internet for finding people who care about fasteners.
@attoparsec I'm pretty sure it says you're taking damage from in front, but your ally is healing from the left.
I will never understand automotive information system logic.
Torment (1944) A clumsy examination of abusive teaching practices and exam stress in the guise of a cautionary morality play. It very much does that mid-century thing of explicitly and earnestly talking about psychology all the time. I found most the characters to be exaggerated caricatures […]
They don't look too different, but after lengthening the arms by 10 mm, adding a well-defined bend outwards to match the width of my head perfectly with a heat gun and a printed jig, and then giving the ear-grabber-hooks a more pronounced curve... I think these […]
Still waiting on the sight glass, but the oil seals came in, so the turret has been reassembled with all its spindles. A couple of the bearings in there were feeling a bit chunky, so I replaced all those as well. And new snap rings, too!
(Yes, it only ever had 5 […]
I've been thinking about making an exoplanet orrery, because ultra-short period planets could fix the biggest problems with orreries: scale. It really bugs me that you can't (practically) show the planets and their orbits and the sun all on the same scale in our […]
@hannah I like that they made it paint-by-numbers-able.
@jef Yikes!
@dymaxion.org Crap, I hadn't even realized he had died!
The Last Chance (1945) A POW/refugee escape film with actors who had actually escaped a POW camp, shot in Switzerland while the war was still going on. The acting/writing isn't always the strongest, but overall it's fine with a couple pretty good moments. More importantly, the urgency and fear […]
Update: Turns out the oil seals were trivially available on Amazon, so that's sorted. And after a false start, I think I've figured out the proper replacement for the sight glass. The key there was to look for a "Bijur Window Unit", which somehow never came up during searches for press-fit sight […]
I've added number set symbols to my collection of technical concept emoji, for those interested: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/eokvzxxf24j5h276q3e0f/AML69HDq7WsD5ZnQyGcpAP0?rlkey=eyeuzjyvtkdm9tm23maawn4fp&st=lokl2u2f&dl=0
Not a wildly productive weekend, but I got the balancing spring in the Burgmaster lever mechanism cleaned up, regreased and remounted. It had snapped at some point before I got it, but close to its inner attachment point, possibly because its lube had gone crusty […]
