A new essay on preventing social engineering that uses voice cloning. This one isn't just for companies, as these attacks are being aimed at individuals too. Along the way, we'll learn about security theory and see how it helps us address real problems.

Can you add words to the local spellcheck dictionary on nextcloud yet? There seem to be so many little corners like that that are just broken.

@dymaxion.orgOct 13, 2026, 6:21 PM

How do you get security monitoring and reliable patching? And what happens when the one sysadmin burns or?

@dymaxion.orgOct 13, 2026, 6:09 PM

I've still never found an answer of how to get meaningful security monitoring for an NGOs hosted nextcloud install. Even if they get it working and have someone to patch it, it will eventually get popped and how are they even going to know?

@dymaxion.orgOct 13, 2026, 6:07 PM

I think you're either going to end up with effectively monopoly hosted services or local clients which may be monopoly or may be spec-interop and then commodity managed storage — because the latter case is simple enough that everyone can actually run their own individually.

@dymaxion.orgOct 13, 2026, 6:05 PM

Yeah. I guess I think that most of the existing options for that basically don't work. They require a layer of small businesses or volunteer sysadmins that don't exist and address unlikely to be stable. Heck, even getting stuff functional for groups with existing centrally hosted stuff is a lift.

@dymaxion.orgOct 13, 2026, 5:50 PM

I'm thinking something that gives you the experience of live collaborative editing and document sharing that you get with Drive, but without it being a web app.

@dymaxion.orgOct 13, 2026, 5:30 PM

Honestly, I think local clients with network storage and decentralized sharing might be the better way to go. Otherwise, it's not really a commodity hosted service and I think you're always going to have monopoly pressure

@dymaxion.orgOct 13, 2026, 5:28 PM

I really wish any of the online foss tool suites would work on ux polish so the experience of using them didn't suck so much. If the hosting isn't going to be centralized, then it also needs to somehow not need someone to be a sysadmin to get backups and monitoring working.

@dymaxion.orgOct 13, 2026, 5:22 PM

Yeah, if I didn't care about nightlife or, like, run a night club and a chunk of the dyke march, I could maybe give it up... I've been off it a couple months, actually, but that'll need to end soon

@dymaxion.orgOct 13, 2026, 4:53 PM

And yeah, I guess there is stuff on telegram here, but I absolutely refuse to install it. It helps that Finland invented sms, so that's the fallback for everything here.

@dymaxion.orgOct 13, 2026, 4:51 PM

Yeah, Facebook used to be essential here. It's a bit of a ghost town now. Not being on Instagram would be much harder. Thankfully almost everyone I actually talk to is on signal

@dymaxion.orgOct 13, 2026, 4:39 PM

Huh. I did? But maybe France is harder

ABSTRACT
In September 2026, the European Commission published a proposed EU KIDS Act, responding to the
demand for restrictions and further design obligations applying to digital services accessible to children,
including social media. This Article argues that regardless of what one believes about the merits of this
policy direction, the EU KIDS Act is not the legislative text we need. The scope and drafting are little
short of chaotic, full of holes, enormous ambiguities, and unintended consequences. Recitals contradict
articles. The use of scope borrowed from other pieces of legislation not designed for this purpose brings
services into scope that should not be subject to the relevant provisions, like book-recommendation
websites, music services, or exercise trackers. The infrastructural requirement for assurance of age and
parental responsibility attestation simply omits enormous issues of complex families and childhoods.
Complex design obligations are written in ways that can be plausibly interpreted as implicitly prohibiting
entire swathes of products, such as voice assistants. This Article outlines these issues, and many more.
The Commission should withdraw this proposal and reissue a workable and realistic tex

While modern small arms (excepting shotguns) specify ammunition by caliber, which is to say diameter, artillery has helpfully kept things interesting by using the word caliber to describe the length of the barrel in multiples of its diameter — the barrel of a 50-caliber 100mm howitzer is 5m long.

Matthew Shepard died on October 12th in 1998, 28 years ago. His ashes were interred at Washington National Cathedral 20 years later, in 2018, because before Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson offered the Cathedral's crypt, his family had no place for him that would be safe from desecration.
