My attempt at a Villanelle, I don’t think I’ve written one for a few years, inspired by @aleaamoris.bsky.social … still waiting to see your Mesosphere write 😂

Nightly Wanderings

Do you dream of me as I dream of you?
In the slow, steady heartbeat of sleep
I find you in landscapes I wish that you knew.

Is this quiet dance something we do—
Or just heavy secrets we keep?
Do you dream of me as I dream of you?

In silent suspension this thought reaches through,
My heart in my throat, ready to leap—
I find you in landscapes I wish that you knew.

I've watered this dream space, watched as it grew—
Fostering fields that are ready to reap.
Do you dream of me as I dream of you?

Each night I wonder, and think maybe it’s true,
This tiny devotion is something I seek—
I find you in landscapes I wish that you knew.

If we were both dreamers in a dream built for two—
Then I could live happy asleep.
Do you dream of me as I dream of you?
I find you in landscapes I wish that you knew.

My blog analytics show that a #villanelle I published eight years ago, alongside this photo, is suddenly popular in #China.

But why?

Is it the picture or the poem?

Does the poem test students of advanced English?

Is someone training up their latest AI behemoth?

What will fall bring?

Looking For Spring Thaw
I think you loved me in October—
Before the winter made us harsh.
But now I fear fall days are over.

I felt our evenings growing colder
While my flame burned within your hearth—
I think you loved me in October.

And we let dying embers linger,
Casting fireflies in the dark.
But now I fear fall days are over.

Then the shadows deepened further,
As their coldness drew a mark—
I think you loved me in October?

I heard winter crack like thunder,
Still craving autumn's vanished warmth—
But now I fear fall days are over.

I still see in you a lover—
A shelter rocked against my storm…
I think you loved me in October,
But now I fear fall days are over.Finding Us In Summer
I fear I lost you in December
As the frost lay silent on the ground.
Perhaps now in spring you will remember.

I tried to reignite your fading ember
But I realized that your spark had long burnt out—
I fear I lost you in December.

There was moonlight and fireflies in September—
Yet it's funny how loss doesn’t make a sound.
Perhaps now in spring you will remember.

Behind your distant voice I hear a tremor,
And the remnants of a fire now since drowned—
I fear I lost you in December.

The future still held momentum in November—
Glimpses of our fingers held and bound.
Perhaps now in spring you will remember.

Though you forget I swear I won’t surrender
This connection our blooming flames have found—
I fear I lost you in December
Perhaps now in spring you will remember. Will We See The Fall Once More?

I heard the silent March grow bolder,
Turning absence into sound—
Or is September getting colder?

You bear an anvil on your shoulder.
While you were collapsing to the ground—
I heard the silent March grow bolder.

As the daylight stretches shorter,
Is there a warm hearth to be found—
Or is September getting colder?

The creases show us growing older,
In the strangers we are now—
I heard the silent March grow bolder.

And you are always hunting order—
Will its capture finally make you proud,
Or is September getting colder?

I've become just some placeholder,
Though it’s not been said aloud—
I heard the silent March grow bolder,
Or is September getting colder?

I’ve been wrestling with the villanelle form and am afraid it has broken me! It really doesn’t allow for any give! Anyway, here’s a poem about the oldest tree in Ireland (or so I was told).

#villanelle #Kildare #Maynooth #Cromabú #poetry

Yew Tree at Maynooth
This yew remembers his back on its bark.
Strange melodies coiled in roots underground.
Skin lily white, cap's embroidered silk mark.
Fingers pluck lute strings, dull notes falling stark.
Sanguineous arils hang heavy and round.
This yew remembers his back on its bark.
Bréagadóiri tricks cast wide for a lark.
Russet-red fissure where poison is found.
Skin lily white, cap's embroidered silk mark.
Stanihurst's 'brainless boy' fighting monarch or Pale and Gael hero at last unbound?
This yew remembers his back on its bark.
Crom abú to St. Mary's in rebel arc.
To surrender sword, the Council confound.
Skin lily white, cap's embroidered silk mark.
Leave our shores! Now English-born must embark.
Under siege, stone walls artillery pound.
This yew remembers his back on its bark.
Skin lily white, cap's embroidered silk mark.

Autumn Colors, poem. (Throwback)

A villanelle poem about the deeper meaning of autumn colors, its beauty, and its transformation as a metaphor for human change.

My brand-new villanelle "Fear, in silence" has been published by @newversenews.bsky.social, thanks to @jamespenha.bsky.social.

The repeating rhythm of a #villanelle emerged as 2 contradictory lines from a BBC headline fought with each other on the page.

The Disinherited Knight

Imagine: the whistle of words in the ancient, as voice,
when silence as a mantle embraced our songs,
and hearing your heart was the tangible choice.

Beneath the beech tree our swords shall rejoice:
I’ll ride to the lady where my oath now belongs.
Imagine: the whistle of words in the ancient, as voice.

The day we shall name the wind’s whispers as noise,
our tongues will have cast thorns of reason through wrongs;
and hearing your heart was the tangible choice.

I sail on this draft, where sand waves rejoice;
my horse is of paper, its lengthy condition prolongs—
imagine: the whistle of words in the ancient as voice.

There is no time left among peers but invoice:
our time is now sold in worn leather thongs;
and hearing your heart was the tangible choice.

The kings of this age have speeches of poise—
their manners are scrapers of wood made old toys.
Imagine: the whistle of words in the ancient, as voice,
and hearing your heart was the tangible choice.

The Physics In Your Orbit

I dance away, yet you draw me right back.
Magnetic force, electrical sway—
Two bodies in motion, but on different tracks.

I'm trapped in an infinitely looping path,
And I move, and you spin, and I plot and I trace—
I dance away, yet you draw me right back.

Sprinkled with stardust, stitched into black,
Particles shimmer, but muted and gray—
Two bodies in motion, but on different tracks.

The space never closes, there’s always this gap.
But I still feel you whisper and answer my name—
I dance away, yet you draw me right back.

Held in suspension, chains give no slack—
What is this fulcrum which keeps us at bay?
Two bodies in motion, but on different tracks.

The loop’s an illusion, yet I’ll remain trapped—
Locked into an orbit between night and day.
I dance away, yet you draw me right back.
Two bodies in motion, but on different tracks.
