you said your feelings for us evaporated I asked how they could just disappear you said you didn’t know but you left before I could tell you I found them to return I became the keeper of our feelings exhausting they became messy and all over condensation

Time's like the sun
how it burns
through my dreams
evaporating them
one by one

til clouds rest
over my head
where blue skies
used to sit

but in this anticlimax
my life has become
there's a storm brewing

& when it breaks
I'll stand in the rain
& reclaim every dream
I haven't lived
yet.

I carry pieces of the past
around in my pockets
like lint or loose change—

& used to value them
just the same.

But once I tried
to throw some
in the bin

& my heart,
with an anguished shriek,
snatched them back—

turns out these scraps
are all that's left
of the best times
I ever had.

Some people discard their leftovers immediately When they get a hankering for them, they’re gone Some people keep their leftovers too long They make themselves sick Some people know leftovers only have a short shelf life They enjoy the best parts while they can and then let go

My mummified past
follows me around
like a zombie,
unable to rest.

It wants my time,
my attention,

but I give it nothing.

It is not
what it pretends to be—
made grotesque
by too many attempts
at resurrection.

If only it could
lay down in its grave
& find the peace
we deserve.
