Just like magic

Julie arrived just before nine with two cups of coffee and a tired smile. She handed one to Izzy and then stared incredulously at the handwritten directions and fuzzy map printout.
"Hey, so why don't we use my GPS? I brought it from LA"
"I've never used one before," Izzy admitted.
"It's easy," Julie said, already retrieving it from the car. "You punch in the destination, and it tells you where to go. Like magic---except bossier."

“It’s a big change. Are you ready for this?” she asked, giving Izzy one last chance to change her mind.
Izzy caught the woman’s eyes in the mirror. “Yeah,” she said. “It’s time.”
Before she knew it, her hair was pulled into a ponytail, braided, and tied off. A few quick snips later, it was gone, dropped into a resealable bag ready for donation.
“Now,” the hairdresser said, “let’s talk about style. You don’t have much left to work with. Any ideas about what you want?”
Izzy hadn’t thought that far ahead. The plan had always been to cut it off. She never gave any thought to what came after.
“I don’t know,” she said finally. “Just…make me look cool?”

She gasped and shot upright, her eyes widening. For years she had done everything she could to erase the raid from her memory. Now she closed her eyes and held her breath, turning the memory over and over until a cold sweat prickled across her skin and nausea settled heavily in her stomach.
Oh, fuck.

The others all blinked. Then nodded solemnly, murmuring vague comments about apples and snakes.
A small, sly grin tugged at Lucy’s lips. She knew what she was about to say was risky, but she also knew it was exactly what needed to be said to make Miles leave. Perhaps permanently.

When seven-year-old Isabell asked how planes fly, Andrea Brewer decided she needed a better answer than “engines and wings.” So she explained the theory of flight by comparing airflow to children fleeing from a classroom to the playground. Isabell still thought it was a good comparison, though she hadn’t known at seven that communal, mostly unsupervised spaces like playgrounds could be high-pressure places too.

By the time it ended, she’d found a spot overlooking the lake and pulled over. For reasons she’d never quite understood, Lake Ontario had always brought her a sense of calm. Right now, she needed some of that serenity to plan their next steps.
She put the car in park and waited.
At first, neither of them spoke, both staring out at the foreboding lake. Jacqueline lost herself in its enormity, watching the dark grey waters stretch seemingly to the horizon.

As someone said the last time I shared this snip, "Someone get Shannon some flowers!" 🪻🌹🌷🌼💐

#WIPSnips #QueerWriters #WritingPrompts #Shaqueline #SapphicWriters #sapphicauthors #WriteSky #Sapphic

Shannon rolled her shoulders and looked down the street for the bus. A flash of colour on the snowy sidewalk caught her eye. A bouquet of lavender roses lay discarded on the ground. She didn’t understand how someone could be so careless with something that took so much thought.
As she stared at them, their petals broken and slowly scattering on the wind, she wondered what it would feel like to be the person someone bought flowers for—then immediately felt foolish at the thought.

Shannon caught the briefest flash of annoyance on Jacqueline’s face before it vanished behind her polished mask. If Shannon had blinked, she would’ve missed it.
“No, sorry—this is my cousin Cecilia from Montreal,” she answered before Jacqueline could.
Jacqueline blinked, then, like a chameleon, changed her expression again. She turned to the man, her brow furrowed. “Je suis désolée. Je ne parle pas très bien anglais. Qu’est-ce que vous avez dit?” To Shannon’s ear, the French accent sounded flawless.
“Oh. Excusez-moi,” he said with a thick accent. He turned to Shannon as the official translator. “She looks remarkably like the singer Jacqueline Lamont.”
“Oui, merci. Bonne journée. Je n’ai pas envi de vous parler, celui-là. Que la foule est fatigante se soir!” Jacqueline added, biting back a laugh.
Shannon’s eyebrows rose. “She gets that a lot.”

The night before, Jacqueline had started moving Mary’s bedroom to the first floor. Rebecca had refused to help, and Jacqueline had no one else to ask. When she tried to move her mother’s bed frame, her hand caught and twisted, sending white-hot pain through her arm. She’d hissed an expletive, and the taste of soap in her mouth from the last time she’d sworn in her mother’s house came rushing back as a memory she’d sooner forget. She abandoned the attempt, deciding to try again the next day.

For a moment, it looked like Izzy was finally letting her guard down. Maybe she believed her. Maybe this was the first step towards repairing what Julie had broken. A flicker of something warm and familiar appeared in Izzy’s eyes.
“Julie…” Izzy began.
The soft, unguarded way she said her name made Julie’s heart and hopes lift.
Then it was gone. Izzy blinked, then straightened, and the warmth vanished, leaving only a cold emotional distance.
Julie felt the words before they were spoken, and her heart sank.
Izzy shook her head. “I don’t think so.” Her eyes lingered for a heartbeat too long before she turned away and continued packing her bag.

“No,” Izzy said, shrugging on her jacket. “But it went about as well as I expected.”
Julie’s shoulders slumped. “Could…do you think we could catch up some time?”
“Isn’t that what we just did?” The question landed like a slap. Not cruel, just final.

“How do you feel?” Beverly asked.
Lucy winced. “Like everything is shouting at me, and I don’t understand why,” she murmured, attempting a weak smile. “How did I get here? And where is here?”
“You’re in my guest room,” Beverly said calmly. “Clara and I brought you here after you refused to go to your apartment.”
“Oh.” Lucy groaned and pressed her palms to her temples. She hoped if she pressed hard enough she would remind her body that it wasn’t in a spinning freefall from a great height.
“Have you learned your lesson, Pipsqueak?”
“What lesson is that again?”
“To pace yourself at a bar, sweetheart.” The usual bite was absent from Beverly’s voice. “You are sweet, attractive, and prime for free drinks. If you don’t take it slow, you’ll have many more days like this.”
“I sincerely hope not. It’s barely morning and I already despise today.”

“I’m from near Peterborough. Lindsay, specifically.”
“I’ve been to Lindsay. Driven through, anyway,” Jacqueline said. “It’s beautiful in autumn.”
Shannon’s smile reached her eyes. “Yes, it is.”
“Do you miss it?”
Shannon shook her head. “No, I like Toronto. I spent most of my childhood wishing I lived in a bigger city instead of on a farm in the middle of nowhere.”
“You lived on a farm? I never would’ve guessed. You don’t seem like the type.”
The fact that Jacqueline had given her any thought at all sent a nervous thrill through Shannon.
“You’re right. I’m not.” She chuckled. “That’s why I’m in Toronto.”

“What are the police going on about?” Cèilidh asked. “They’re normally not quite so thorough.”
“Something about some smutty books?” Clara said. “Why are they here looking for books?”
Beverly and Cèilidh exchanged a tense glance.
“They’re looking for us, Bev,” Cèilidh whispered.
“Stop calling me Bev, and don’t you think I know that?” she whispered back. “How do they even know about us?”
“I think we should get out of here,” Cèilidh said quietly to Beverly. “We can worry about why later.”
Liv looked at Clara. “I think they have a veldig strange stemmning—uh, chemistry?”
Clara nodded.
“We don’t have chemistry,” they said over each other.

Happy belated birthday, Ocean!

Shannon didn't know what kind of book she was reading on the bus!

#QueerWriters #WritingPrompts #Shaqueline #SapphicWriters #WritingCommunity #sapphicauthors #WriteSky

“I know. Naïve.” She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “Anyway, a woman spotted me reading it, and we ended up talking for an hour. Turns out, it wasn’t the book that caught her attention. It was the sticker. She was part of this group of women who used to rewrite the endings, then sneak into bookstores and swap them out. They’d leave these stickers on the front so other women could find them.”
Jacqueline’s eyebrows rose. “Do they still do this?”
“Not any more,” Shannon said. “She said her wife—she called her her wife anyway—writes her own books now.” Shannon debated her next words, then took a sip of wine, borrowing a little courage from it before continuing. “I guess I wanted you to have this book because I think everyone deserves a happily ever after.”

“Agreed,” Lucy said. “I’m certain you’ll make some woman very happy one day. Very soon.”
“Takk, lille venn,” Liv said, her smile returning. “You are the best group of lesbians a Norwegian could ask for.” She paused, glancing between Cèilidh and Stella. “What do you call a group of lesbians?”
Cèilidh shrugged. “I don’t know that there’s a common name for a group of lesbians.”
“Fluster,” Beverly said. She sat pensively, cradling her tumbler of whisky, almost unaware she had said anything.
Until everyone turned to her.
“Not officially.” She gave a crooked grin. “I just think it fits. Every lesbian I know becomes incredibly flustered around other lesbians.”

A crowd began to form around the stage to watch the meltdown of the Mixtape Makers. The guitarist could barely keep up. The singer didn’t know the words. The bass player seemed completely lost. No one was in key; no one could find a rhythm. No one seemed to even be familiar with the song.
 Except for the drummer.
