Lucy takes book club seriously

The others all blinked. Then nodded solemnly, murmuring vague comments about apples and snakes.
A small, sly grin tugged at Lucy’s lips. She knew what she was about to say was risky, but she also knew it was exactly what needed to be said to make Miles leave. Perhaps permanently.

Lucy’s patience was frayed by the time Professor Lawrence finally concluded his scathing critique of popular fiction. She spent the majority of class ignoring everything but the paper in front of her until the only impression the lecture left was the dent her ballpoint pressed into the page.

Lucy has regrets.

It's the only use of the word across 3 books, so we're reposting this one.

“How do you feel?” Beverly asked.
Lucy winced. “Like everything is shouting at me, and I don’t understand why,” she murmured, attempting a weak smile. “How did I get here? And where is here?”
“You’re in my guest room,” Beverly said calmly. “Clara and I brought you here after you refused to go to your apartment.”
“Oh.” Lucy groaned and pressed her palms to her temples. She hoped if she pressed hard enough she would remind her body that it wasn’t in a spinning freefall from a great height.
“Have you learned your lesson, Pipsqueak?”
“What lesson is that again?”
“To pace yourself at a bar, sweetheart.” The usual bite was absent from Beverly’s voice. “You are sweet, attractive, and prime for free drinks. If you don’t take it slow, you’ll have many more days like this.”
“I sincerely hope not. It’s barely morning and I already despise today.”

I dag skal vi bruke et norske ord, Stemning. Today we're using a Norwegian word, stemning.
In this scene, my book club lesbians are stuck in a closet during a police raid.

“What are the police going on about?” Cèilidh asked. “They’re normally not quite so thorough.”
“Something about some smutty books?” Clara said. “Why are they here looking for books?”
Beverly and Cèilidh exchanged a tense glance.
“They’re looking for us, Bev,” Cèilidh whispered.
“Stop calling me Bev, and don’t you think I know that?” she whispered back. “How do they even know about us?”
“I think we should get out of here,” Cèilidh said quietly to Beverly. “We can worry about why later.”
Liv looked at Clara. “I think they have a veldig strange stemmning—uh, chemistry?”
Clara nodded.
“We don’t have chemistry,” they said over each other.
“Clearly not,” Clara drawled, rolling her eyes.

What is the collective noun for a group of lesbians? 🤔 Beverly has an answer

#WIPSnips #QueerWriters #WritingPrompts #FLBC #SapphicWriters #sapphicauthors #WriteSky #Sapphic

“Agreed,” Lucy said. “I’m certain you’ll make some woman very happy one day. Very soon.”
“Takk, lille venn,” Liv said, her smile returning. “You are the best group of lesbians a Norwegian could ask for.” She paused, glancing between Cèilidh and Stella. “What do you call a group of lesbians?”
Cèilidh shrugged. “I don’t know that there’s a common name for a group of lesbians.”
“Fluster,” Beverly said. She sat pensively, cradling her tumbler of whisky, almost unaware she had said anything.
Until everyone turned to her.
“Not officially.” She gave a crooked grin. “I just think it fits. Every lesbian I know becomes incredibly flustered around other lesbians.”

Lucy's pretty much spot on with her description of Norwegian, especially Liv's Norwegian.

“If you’d please excuse me for a moment.” Lucy started to step away from the counter, looking towards the back of the store.
Liv stepped in front of her, stopping Lucy in her tracks and blocking her view to the back. “Nei da!”
From the back of the shop came a cough that cut through the noise of the Norwegian’s protest. It sounded suspiciously like someone trying not to laugh.
Is that woman laughing at the book or is she laughing at me?
Lucy craned and twisted to catch a glimpse of the woman back there, but Liv was standing in the way, her arms akimbo. She launched into another rapid stream of Norwegian—sharp, melodic, faintly indignant. The tone suggested righteous outrage, but the delivery suggested mild intoxication.
Lucy simply wanted to find a book by anyone remotely resembling Bearstar and end the interaction with dignity intact.

when Cèilidh sat down and left enough room between them for the Holy Spirit and its entire extended family, Lucy took matters into her own hands and plopped down on Cèilidh’s blanket instead.
“Yours is softer—and big enough for two,” she said with a kind smile. “You don’t mind, do you?”
Cèilidh shook her head and scooted over to give her more space.
More space isn’t the point, Cèilidh, but we’ll get there.
Lucy soon noticed Cèilidh’s hand flitting toward her, only to hurriedly retreat to her lap each time.
After the third attempt, Lucy slyly set her bag between them and rummaged through it for a tube of hand cream she didn’t particularly need.
The next time Cèilidh’s hand crept closer, Lucy simply caught it and held it there behind the bag.
“Just hold my hand if that’s what you want,” she whispered.

#SapphicLineShare ****Senses (taste)****

From WIP3 - The First Lesbian Book Club, from chapter "Hope You Like It Spicy, Part Two."

Beverly has made a grave error. 🌶️🌶️🌶️

#QueerWriters #WritingPrompts #FLBC #SapphicWriters #WritingCommunity #sapphicauthors #WriteSky #LesFic

The spices assaulted Beverly’s tongue before she finished her first bite, and when the heat struck the back of her throat, she coughed. Clara glanced up at once, concern flashing across her face. But Beverly, in a foolish attempt to preserve her dignity, hastily shoved more spaghetti into her mouth and regretted it the instant it touched her tongue. Her face went scarlet and her eyes watered. It felt like swallowing fire.
Clara returned to her plate and took a bite. “Whew.” She reached for her wine. “When you said you liked it a little spicy, I did not expect this.”
Beverly waved her off, though she knew she probably shouldn’t. She should confess her mouth felt full of lava and warn Clara not to take another bite.
But any words she tried to form burned on her tongue.
“Good heavens,” Clara said, exhaling sharply. “It keeps building. Did you use scotch bonnet peppers?”
Beverly had to admit Clara was bearing it far better. Then again, Clara had taken a sensible bite, while Beverly had shovelled in a heroic forkful in the name of pride. Or perhaps nerves. Both led to questionable life choices.
“Are you all right?” Clara asked.
“Too spicy.” Beverly grabbed a hunk of baguette and crammed it into her mouth, chewing furiously in hopes it might defeat the capsaicin.
It didn’t help. Now she had a burning mouth and a wad of bread to chew and swallow before her throat closed in protest.

“I’m Liv,” she replied plainly.
Cèilidh nodded. “Well, Liv, have you gone mad?”
Liv looked at her in surprise. “I don’t think so, nei.”
“Are you really suggesting we blow up the hotel bar with dynamite?”
“Nei, nei, nei.” Liv shook her hands and head as she spoke. “It was veldig loud and a veldig good distraction. When my parents were looking at the blown up stein, I was stealing the tractor to visit the girl in the neighbouring village. She looked very sexy riding my tractor, you know.”
The others stared at her.
Cèilidh was the first to speak. “You’re suggesting we use a bomb as a distraction?”
Beverly rolled her eyes. “Jesus, Cèilidh. Are you dense?”
“Can it, Bev. I’m trying to understand what the hell this woman is talking about.”
“Nei, herregud, where would we get dynamitt?” Liv said with a wry grin.
“I have no idea, but I’m worried you do.” Cèilidh sighed in frustration.
“Nei, we do not need dynamitt. We require our own boom!”

Having lived in all three named countries, I sympathize with Lucy. The debate is real, and I never know what to expect. 🍮

Lucy had also learned that Canadian English and English English were not the same thing. Which Stella reminded her of frequently.
I suppose that’s what necessitates the proper designation in the first place, she mused as she searched for a stick to help shape their castle.
Something as simple as pudding had caused a lively debate at book club one night. Stella presented her proper English sticky toffy pudding, and Lucy stared at it bewildered.
“What you call pudding, Miss Graham, is simply custard,” Stella had declared.
Then Liv had informed them both they were wrong and began explaining Norwegian pudding.
The discussion spiralled into a debate on the differences between custard, flan, and pudding, and by the end of the evening, Lucy was more confused—and considerably hungrier—than when it began.

#lesficfri ***REGRET***

Beverly usually doesn't flirt like a cactus, but Clara's different.

#QueerWriters #WritingPrompts #FLBC #SapphicWriters #WritingCommunity #sapphicauthors #WriteSky #LesFic

Not that spending time with Clara was unpleasant. She had looked for excuses to spend time with her, but every time she did, Clara left her unnerved. Beverly knew the longer they spent together, the more likely she was to say something regrettable. That’s just how she was around Clara; her mouth moved before her brain could catch up.
Perhaps Lucy and Cèilidh were right about how she behaved around Clara. Then again, everyone else in the book club seemed to have seen right through her, so why hadn’t Clara?
Beverly had spent weeks making a fool of herself flirting with Clara—or trying to.
And that was another thing. Why was flirting with Clara like deciphering hieroglyphics? With any other women, it was simple. A wink and a smile usually got the message across. With Clara, Beverly either stared like an idiot or avoided eye contact entirely.

“Did you find everything you were looking for today, ladies?” he asked with a polite smile.
“More than we intended,” Beverly said dryly.
From the corner of her eye she saw Clara’s shoulders shaking beside her.
“And you’d like to purchase that book, ma’am?” He pointed to Beverly’s hand.
“Yes,” Beverly said through gritted teeth.
“If I could just see it to—”
“Oh, no.” Beverly lifted the book reverently in both hands, as though it were a rare manuscript. “I am simply too eager to begin reading. I cannot bear to let it go.” She opened to a page as much as her hand would allow. “It’s just so…riveting.”

They didn't talk about the film again...🎥🎞️

#WIPSnips #QueerWriters #WritingPrompts #FLBC #SapphicWriters #sapphicauthors #WriteSky #Sapphic

“That was good,” Lucy said as the house lights came up.
Cèilidh pursed her lips.
Normally this was the part of the evening where people discussed the movie they’d just seen. For the life of her, Cèilidh could describe almost none of it. What she could describe, with uncanny precision, was Lucy’s warm, faintly floral perfume. Elegant, mysterious, and quintessentially Lucy. She could write a newspaper’s worth of articles on the feeling of Lucy’s fingers intertwined with hers, or the patterns those fingers had drawn on her skin in the darkened theatre.
But the film? She couldn’t even remember the title.
“I was, um, a little distracted,” Cèilidh admitted.
“Oh?” Lucy’s eyes gleamed mischievously. Her hand discreetly stroked Cèilidh’s fingers again as they made their way through the lobby. “Whyever were you distracted, I wonder.”
Cèilidh inhaled slowly. Lucy’s touch was entirely too effective.
“I haven’t the foggiest.” She cleared her throat. “Perhaps you can recount the entire film to me over coffee? I know a place nearby.”
