‘Digging’ was written by Seamus Heaney in August 1964 and was first published in the New Statesman in December of that same year. It is the opening poem of Heaney’s 1966 collection Death of a Naturalist. #Poetry #IrishPoetry

"When Francis preached love to the birds
They listened, fluttered, throttled up
Into the blue like a flock of words
Released for fun from his holy lips."

Title: Cemetery Bus Stop in Drizzle

The 1:21 AM woman
5 bags at the B&B entrance
Picked up by a blue taxi
Or some put upon relation

I sit at the cemetery bus stop
To shelter from the drizzle
In case something happens
But nothing happens

The floor drops
The sky rises
My focus blurs
Then sharpens

Dressed for a summer's day
Packed for I don't know what
She placed her bags in the boot
And left laughing

I stand to continue home
Stumble into sitting again

Doing some research for a catalogue essay, and found this unannotated magazine cutting where Eavan Boland interviews Norah McGuinness. Would any #irishstudies / #irishpoetry people know when or where Boland edited an arts column? It is, of course, a brilliant exchange between these two women.

Title: I Know Love

It drives people to climb big wheels
Fight kaiju
Run in the rain

But that's not me
I want to sit quietly
Beside my girl

Watch movies
Play Xbox
And stay dry

Sometimes when she
Leaves the room
I'll check her phone

(Who's Lee?)

Go through her emails
And her Instagram too
Note the names

Maybe sometimes follow her
To work or on the bus
Make sure she gets there
Safely

(Is that Lee?)

It feels like love
I catch my rain soaked reflection
In a bus window
And look away

Sally Rooney's stripped-back, direct style has genuinely reshaped what a lot of contemporary Irish fiction sounds like now.

Title: Wendy James

Wendy James is a Tradescantia
Living in my mini IKEA
Greenhouse
Twenty two degrees
And humid

Wendy James was
The singer for Transvision Vamp

Through fogged glass
Her vines have
Crept beyond her pot
Encroaching on
Her neighbours
She doesn't care

Her leaves
Green, and yellow
And pink smother
The Fittonia's small browning leaves
In her glitter ball pot

Title: My Throat

The first knock woke me up
Was that a dream?
I couldn't tell

The second knock startled me
Is it in the house?
My head was throbbing

A third knock, too loud
Why?
I stumbled to the door

I didn't want to.

Did I see movement?

I risked a hello
My words caught
In my throat

My throat

I froze a moment
Something dropped
Off the knocker

It was blood.
Am I bleeding?

Dreams of Dianne

Title: Dreams of Dianne

Dianne Wiest as the mother
In The Lost Boys
Is really foxy

I might be too old
For her character
To be interested in now

At the same time
I hear the clicking
In my knees
Standing at a film's end

My ankles don't bend
As quietly as they used to
And my shoulders have
Hair I didn't know before

Bed is warmly welcomed
Close my eyes
To dreams of Dianne

Seamus Heaney proved you don't need grand settings for great poetry — a bog, a spade, a childhood farm were more than enough material.

Title: Sentimental Poem No.1

I remember playing on the sitting room floor
Waiting for my father
In his brown duffle coat
That smelt of cigarette smoke

Or sharing a Chinese meal
From the Roundabout
At the kitchen table
A meal for four feeding six

There's nothing wrong with sentimental poems
Except they sometimes make me cry
The meal for four is no longer required

Title: Finished

I blow
into the bottom of the cartridge
Place it into the slot
Turn the power on
I begin to play

My mother
Observes the game
As the cry of FINISH HIM
Blares through the
Tinny speaker
And my avatar
Rips my enemy's head off

She asks
If this violence is typical
In Mortal Kombat
I describe the variety
Of fatalities
Her eyes tighten
Her lips do too

I no longer play SEGA.

“North” will definitely need a few re-reads to begin to scratch beneath its earths. Wonderful.

Title: Pastor Dave's First and Last Sermon

A rainbow of light spilled
Across the Tabernacle
From the sun shining
Through the stained glass windows

The congregation fanned themselves
Quietly watching as Pastor Dave
Stepped up to the altar

Rubber soles squeaking on the marble
The pastor's face reflecting blue
Then red, finally purple

A bead of sweat trickled
From neck to shoulder blade
Before disappearing into his vest

Pastor Dave cleared his throat
Licked his lips and began
"In the beginning was the Wurb
And the Wurb was with Gurd
And the Wurb was Gurd."

It was a short service that day.
