In ancient Babylonia and the broader Mesopotamian culture, grasshoppers (and their swarming phase, locusts) held a multi-layered, dual meaning. They represented both a positive symbol of fertility and abundance and a destructive force of nature used in divination and dietary sustenance.
In their solitary, non-destructive form, grasshoppers were viewed by Babylonians as symbols of the natural cycle, fertility, and abundance. Because they appeared in large numbers during agricultural cycles, they were tied to the life-giving forces of the earth.
This famous example is a beautifully detailed, nearly 4,000-year-old Babylonian stone weight carved from hematite in the shape of a grasshopper (c. 1800–1700 BCE). Used in markets for fair trade transactions, the grasshopper shape on the weight likely invoked blessings of agricultural prosperity and nature.
When solitary grasshoppers crowded together and transformed into swarming locusts, their meaning shifted drastically. To the Babylonians, a locust swarm was a catastrophic event that could strip fields bare and cause widespread famine.
Babylonians were deeply invested in astrology and divination. Grasshopper and locust behavior was carefully documented in cuneiform omen series (such as the Šumma Ālu). A swarm of grasshoppers appearing in a specific city or flying in a particular direction was interpreted as a direct message or warning from the gods, usually predicting economic ruin, military invasion, or divine displeasure.
Despite the threat they posed to crops, grasshoppers were heavily utilized by Babylonians in daily practical life.
Babylonians actively harvested locusts and grasshoppers for food. Cuneiform records show that mass amounts of these insects were caught, preserved in brine, and transported over hundreds of kilometers to be eaten as a protein-rich delicacy or everyday staple.

Thrived in the fertile valleys and coastal plains of the modern Mexican state of Colima and surrounding areas.
Roots trace back to the early Capacha culture (around 1500 BCE), with its main artistic peak occurring during the Late Pre-Classic and Classic periods (300 BCE – 600 CE).
Known for deep, bottle-shaped underground burial chambers containing rich ceramic grave goods meant to accompany the dead.
Famous for expressive, smooth redware and burnished terracotta effigies of hairless dogs (Xoloitzcuintli), which were believed to guide souls to the underworld.

#handmade #carved #stone #standing #figure #Mezcala #culture #Guerrero #Mexico #ancientart #ancientsculpture #art #sculpture #Mesoamerica #ancientMexico #precolumbian #prehispanic #precolumbianart #Mezcalasculpture

The Mezcala culture (sometimes referred to as the Balsas culture) is the name given to a Mesoamerican culture that was based in the southern Mexican state of Guerrero in the upper Balsas River region. The culture is poorly understood but is believed to have developed during the Middle and Late Preclassic periods of Mesoamerican chronology between 700 and 200 BC. The culture continued into the Classic period (c.250-650 AD) when it coexisted with the great metropolis of Teotihuacan.
Mezcala-style sculpture is characterised by abstract facial features, suggested by lines and differences in texture. The Mezcala sculptural style emphasizes geometric abstraction in both human figures and architectural models. The sculptural style of the Mezcala culture may have been influenced by the Olmecs. In turn, it may have influenced the development of sculpture at the Classic-period metropolis of Teotihuacan in the Valley of Mexico.
Later civilizations, like the Aztecs, valued Mezcala items; archaeologists have found Mezcala standing figures and artifacts buried as offerings inside the Templo Mayor in Mexico City.

In ancient Mesoamerica (particularly in Maya and Classic Veracruz cultures), an hacha (Spanish for "axe") was a critical piece of ceremonial gear associated with the Mesoamerican ballgame. While lightweight wooden versions were likely worn on the players' heavy belts during active matches, these highly detailed stone replicas were carved for ritual displays, architectural integration, or dedication ceremonies.

The Purépecha are an indigenous people centered in the highlands of Michoacán, Mexico, historically renowned for successfully resisting the Aztec Empire and mastering early bronze and copper metallurgy.
Formed a powerful pre-Columbian state around Lake Pátzcuaro.
Defeated the Aztecs in the 1470s and maintained independence until Spanish forces arrived in the 1530s.
Built distinct stepped pyramids known as yácatas.
Language is Purépecha (historically called Tarascan), an isolate language not clearly related to surrounding Mesoamerican tongues.
Traditional arts include advanced metalwork, distinctive woodcraft, and pottery deeply tied to festivals like the Day of the Dead.
Traditional religious beliefs centered on deities like Kurikaweri (sky and war god) and Kwerawáperi (earth mother), which blended with Roman Catholicism over time.
Most members live in Michoacán, with vibrant populations in towns like Cherán, Paracho, and Pátzcuaro.
Growing diaspora communities exist across the United States and Mexican urban centers due to agricultural migration and economic shifts.
