Mid September & the buddleia bush is slowly turning brown, but this Red Admiral #butterfly was still hanging on in there about an hour ago. #butterflies #nature #bugsky #insects

Portrait orientation face on picture of a red, white & black butterfly hanging upside down feeding on one of the last clumps of small pink flowers on a buddleia. The background is more of the bush, but most of the rest of the flowers have died & behind that is some tarmac.

One of the 'risks' of being a resident journalist at a #museum like @smnstuttgart.bsky.social is that there are so many interesting projects going on that tangents are inevitable.

Just been learning more about the diversity of cave beetles - a scientific frontier in itself!

Huh, just sitting there? That’s odd. Maybe see if you can get it to crawl onto a stick and bring it outside? I’m not sure who it is but I’ll tag some feeds to see if somebody else knows.

Free goldenrod, just appeared in the yard. All I had to do was not pull it up.

Aster murderess is still at it. And still gorgeous, heaven help me. Her night eyes are just turning on here 👽 #bugsky

Two years since I planted a spicebush from @beechhollow.bsky.social and at last have been dgraced with an adorable spicebush swallowtail caterpillar! I am SO excited!

Coming from the PNW, I love a good slug. These are leaf-veined slugs, which are an ancient species that only has 2 stalks instead of the usual 4. They're great for native plants because they only eat algae that grow on the plants, not the plant itself.

i got too close to this crab spider and she dropped the little butterfly she was eating, i was going to see if i could convince her to grab it again and found her earlier meals directly below #bugsky #butterflies

a white crab spider on a white clover flower, with her front arms outstretched ready to grab whatever hapless insect comes to check out the flower directly below the spider, the remains of some former hapless insects lay in the grass.

Thirty-ninth native plant blooming in the yard, big leaf aster (Aster macrophyllus). Like last year it's a big hit with tiny ants, but should attract some bees as well.

Macro of a wasp on textured, brown dried wildflower seed heads. Facing forward and slightly to its left with black head and a heavily dimpled black thorax marked with deep rust-red shoulders and trim. Its segmented abdomen alternates between glossy black and rust-red bands. Long, amber-toned legs firmly grip the woody plant structures, while a single elongated, dark wing extends straight back to its right, catching the light with a subtle purplish-black iridescent sheen. The background is completely dark and smoothly out of focus, emphasizing the intricate textures of the insect.

Here’s a female Eastern Tiger Swallowtail. The males are always yellow while the females can be yellow or black. She’s enjoying some Joe Pye Weed in the yard

You'll see the first results here of my mounting media testing. It's a laelapid mite. I am not satisfied with how dark the specimen is. Even after slide mounting, under the microscope the specimen is not clear and not really quite visible. It's a bit disappointing. #bugsky #inverts 🌿🧪

Transmitted light microscope image of a laelapid mite mounted on a slide, dorsal view. The body is a deep orange brown and heavily sclerotised, so dark that internal structure obscures the dorsal shield outline. Long, sparsely spined legs radiate from the body. The specimen is not fully cleared and detail is hard to resolve.A small orange brown mite suspended in a bright yellow droplet of mounting medium on top of a cover slip viewed at low magnification. The mite is pale and semi transparent here, with all eight legs spread out and visible against the yellow field. A few flecks of debris sit in the medium.A microscope stage seen from above, with a slide bearing a single domed droplet of yellow mounting medium under a round coverslip. The objective is out of focus above it. A red box labelled Microscope Slides Frosted sits in the background.Three small orange brown mites before transferring to mounting media in lactic acid on a white background seen through a microscope eyepiece, the circular field of view surrounded by black. Two mites sit close together at upper left, a third smaller one at lower right. Legs and body outlines are clear against the pale background.

Mid September, but this Carder #bee was still busy at it earlier this afternoon. (I might've tweaked the colours a bit, cause I had the phone set to compensate for bright sunlight & it was a bit overcast so the pics looked a bit dark & flat) #bees #bugsky #nature #photography #insects

Hi there, I’m Red-legged Grasshopper. They say that blonds have more fun, but I’ve always thought red-legs were more glamorous. I live across all of NA, can eat any plant around and often mate for hours. Why wouldn’t you want to be me?
