I believe this is a male in his “eclipse” plumage, which is worn outside of the breeding season to aid camouflage.

A male Pileated Woodpecker was working on a rotten stump in the ground and I couldn't get a clear picture of it as there were lots of grass stems. A female was working on the trees close by and I got some good pictures of her. Yarmouth Maine. 13 Oct. 2026.
