Figure symbolising Winter, with hood, cloak and dead hare, from a mosaic (part geometric, part figurative) in Chedworth villa's west range. The room was probably used for dining (triclinium), although too small for major functions.

The warm room (tepidarium) and cold plunge pool (brr!) in the west range at Chedworth, Gloucestershire, UK. The villa reached its peak in the 4th century CE, and was occupied into the 5th century after Roman rule had ended.

The Romans came to Bath nearly 2,000 years ago, built an enormous bathing and religious complex around a hot spring, and left behind curse tablets, coins, temples and some remarkably good plumbing.

For #FindsFriday we have two boxwood combs, one of which was found still in its leather pouch in the Commanding Officer’s residence at #Vindolanda and dating to before 100 C.E.

All combs found were made on the continent and imported.

Out now! Episode 3 of our Hadrian's Wall miniseries:

"Wonders of the Wall - Chesters Roman Fort"

Where we talk altars, grain rations and caltrops - the evil but tiny weapons, so effective they’re still used in warfare today.

On #MosaicMonday a pair of winged cupids dressed as gladiators face off in the dining room of Bignor Roman Villa (W Sussex).

The heavily-armoured Secutor rushes forward, short-sword outstretched, to attack a Retarius desperately fending him off with a trident.

The Retarius appears somewhat smaller than he is in reality as this is an oblique photo.

Around 2,000 years ago, someone stationed at Vindolanda in northern Britain wrote asking for socks, sandals and underpants to be sent to him.

Apparently, British weather has been defeating wardrobes for a very long time.

The ‘Colchester Sphinx’ which was found in the garden of the General Hospital at Colchester in 1821. Dating to the 1st century AD, the sculpture was probably part of a tomb. Now part of the collections at Colchester Castle. #StoneworkSunday #Colchester #RomanBritain
