A good query came up in the comments to these fabulously interesting frescoes about the respective costs of employing a mosaicist or a painter. Starting a new 🧵in case of interest.

Beware of the dog!

The Cave Canem entranceway from #Pompeii is such a timeless #Roman mosaic; the dog still symbolically protects his owner's house, nearly 2000 years after it was destroyed when Mt Vesuvius erupted in AD 79 🐶 #Archaeology #MosaicMonday #AncientBlueSky

No photo, no mosaic, just a text - the abstract of my 10k word paper on play and humour in early figural mosaics Now where to publish

I look at the mosaics in Olynthos, Eretria, Pella and Pergamon and their trompe l’oeil effects

Detail of the Silchester 'Hexagon' mosaic from House 1 in insula XIV. The mosaic has a geometric design in colour of alternating flowers in hexagons and frets (swastikas), all within braid borders. In the collections of Reading Museum.

For #MosaicMonday, our #ScottishChurchOfTheWeek, Central Church in Edinburgh has a striking example in the main first floor hallway. Staircases from the entrance and leading to the balconies all converge here.

Read about the church on the SCT site 👇

Looking around for a mosaic pattern to copy, I landed on the post from @drjeball.bsky.social from last week's #MosaicMonday which shows the entrance to a house in #Pompeii. I got to wondering how to lay out the 4-petalled pattern (bottom right) and fit it into a square of predetermined size.

Very pleasingly designed floor in tepidarium of women's baths in Herculaneum.
Feels like a lovely, languid place to catch up with friends.

Geometric mosaic floor with design of trailing lines of black on white tesserae that form right angles and cross to make swastika like patterns. In spaces between trails of tesserae are rectangular panels that feature small images of eg vase, sun/flower, animal.

In a change from the scheduled momument of Roman mosaics, we now present instead Hans Tisdall – ‘The Alchemist’s Elements’ at Manchester University (1967) [restored and relocated in 2022].

Two brightly coloured large panel wall mosaics one in four square blue, orange and brown and a smaller panel in veritical yellow brown and blue strips. Full sun but partly shaded by a nearby tree. Own photo.A large four square mosaic wall panel in orange, brown, buff stone and green. Subtle patterns hint at possible forms like folds, lines and circles, but abstract and almost indiscernible. Own photo.

A fantastic Roman mosaic from the Musée de la Romanité in Nîmes. #MosaicMonday #Nîmes #Roman

A very detailed square Roman mosaic. The centre is a circle made up of multiple triangular black and white sections surrounded by a circle with a wave pattern. You can only just see different bids in each corner. This is all surround by various brown, white and black borders.

For #MosaicMonday, a c. 60-50 BCE #mosaic floor from the basis villæ, the Late Republican core of Hadrian's Villa. If his wife Vibia #Sabina inherited this estate, her Antonine relatives held a 200-year connection to these local stones, unified by descent rather than adoption. #AncientBluesky 🏺

GEOMETRIC MOSAIC FLOOR, C. 60-50 BCE. BASIS VILLÆ, HADRIAN'S VILLA

A Late Republican mosaic floor in the basis villæ, the original nucleus of Hadrian's Villa, an area long closed to the public. The floor features a tricolour geometric pattern creating a woven trompe l'oeil effect. Rectangular blocks of reddish-brown stone tesseræ are arranged symmetrically around small squares of white stone, sharply delineated by rows of dark grey tesseræ. Dating to c. 60-50 BCE, this elegant mosaic floor in tesseræ of local materials contrasts with Hadrian's C2 expansion that embellished the estate with polychrome marble from across the empire. A widely-held theory suggests Hadrian chose this site because his wife, Vibia Sabina, inherited this older villa. Her mother Matidia, niece of Trajan, was the ancestress of the Antonine dynasty, and if the inheritance of this villa passed through her, then all the emperors from Hadrian to Commodus could claim this as a family property stretching back over two centuries.

As some of us have been discussing the possible Dewlish triton recently, who might have supported a circle, for this #MosaicMonday here's a snaky-legged person to compare and contrast. From the Horkstow mosaic, holding up the circular scenes in the central panel. 1/2

A detail from a coloured engraving of a Roman mosaic. A short-haired figure is kneeling in a spandrel, with part of a circular border of simple guiloche above and multi-strand guilloche borders at lower left and lower right forming parts of the enclosing square. The figure's arms are raised to hold the circle. The figure's lower legs take the form of snakes terminating in splendid crested heads with long red tongues. The heads are placed just below the figure's hands.

✨ #MosaicMonday in Cologne Cathedral: Spain is personified as a crowned woman holding a model of Santiago de Compostela Cathedral — part of a wider allegorical programme of Christian nations.

Close-up of a floor mosaic in Cologne Cathedral showing an allegorical representation of Spain. A crowned female figure sits on a throne in flowing pale and reddish robes and holds a detailed architectural model of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela on her lap. She belongs to a larger symbolic programme in which major Christian nations are represented as enthroned female figures, each holding the principal church associated with that country. Spain is represented by Santiago de Compostela, while other figures in the wider composition represent Italy with St Peter’s Basilica in Rome, the Byzantine Empire with Hagia Sophia in Constantinople, and France with Reims Cathedral. The scene is formed from thousands of small mosaic pieces in cream, ochre, brown, muted red and blue-grey tones and is surrounded by elaborate floral and geometric ornament.Close-up of a floor mosaic in Cologne Cathedral showing an allegorical representation of Spain.
