A rare trip off patch this morning to meet up with Ian Mills and look at the Shorelarks at South Shields. Well worth it as exceptional views were had! #NEbirding

The above show size compared to a feral Canada present all week. A few more show size relative to Barnies #BudleBay #NEbirding

Today saw a slightly belated Barnacle movement, with 1,300 by late afternoon. As ever, the flock was worth scrutinising for North Atlantic Canada and that proved worthwhile, with this presumed Todd's arriving mid-afternoon #BudleBay #NEbirding

Probably harder to find a Gropper than a YBW in October but I managed it😬. Likely a local bird hanging around at Blackhall Rocks. Also of interest was a flock of 32 Common Terns resting on the sea off Horden Beach. I know they can float but I'm not used to seeing them like this.

Had a walk around the patch yesterday, still loads of continental Song Thrushes about. At the bird crops, no sign of the Little Bunting but some lovely views of Reed Bunting. 3 Yellow-browed Warblers and a Brambling at the Tin Church.

Great White Egret remains a rare bird in Gateshead though it is increasing and over the last couple of years there have been a handful of sightings. This one at Shibdon Pond this morning was the 2nd for 2026 #NEbirding

We were fortunate to be sitting in the hide at NWT Holme Dunes when this guy said he could see a Jack Snipe in the reeds in front of us, it eventually showed well after 45 minutes😃

This year has seen a marked decline in the usual late-summer Goosander moult gatherings. Numbers, which can often reach around 100 birds, have remained unusually low, with groups of fewer than 10 recorded to date #BudleBay #NEbirding @rossahmed.bsky.social

Unexpected bird of the day - JAY in off the sea ! I nearly missed it too, it was flying behind me, managed to grab a pic of its arse as it flew off inland. Only my third ever patch Jay, regular a few miles inland but rarer than Pallas's Warbler here !

A couple days walking Holy Island have been superb for clearing one’s head. Huge arrivals of SongThrush yesterday along with Robins galore, a Redstart, 2 Yellow-browed warbler it was relatively quiet today - but two Yellow browed Warbler and Richard’s Pipit maintained the autumn vibes

Red-breasted Flycatcher at Marsden Limekiln this morning. Thanks to the finder! One of the several good birds in the county today. #NEbirding @teesbirds.bsky.social
