A large basaltic mini-island just off the coast of Cape Meares sits in the Pacific Ocean on the northern Oregon coast. It’s dark with seaweed and probably mussels along the water’s edge, and then streaked with gray, brownish green and white going up the sides. On the rugged, domed top, hundreds of sea birds like cormorants tend their nests. You can even hear their calls above the wind. Dark green Sitka spruce boughs poke out from the right and left sides of the picture from where I’m taking the shot on the mainland. The ambient light is cloudy.

The historic 1929 Cornish fishing lugger Peel Castle (registered as PZ 17) is a traditional wooden sailing vessel built by J. Gilbert & S. Pascoe in Porthleven, Cornwall.
