Looking down the Main Street of the old, medieval-age city of Bern, Switzerland at the Zytglogge, an ornately designed clock tower and pedestrian archway. The buildings are lined with the red and white “plus sign” Swiss flags interspersed with colorful canton flags representing the “states” within Switzerland. I lived here for a time and have such important life memories of this place. It’s also where some of my ancestors came from. Also, I love cheese. It must be genetic. Oh, I wish I could go back.

Small, oval inlaid stones on a pathway at Lan Su Chinese Garden in downtown Portland, OR. Shades of dark and light stones are used to make a dark grid, the intersections of which feature lighter stones designed like flowers. It’s lovely. It’s right downtown, but once you’re inside the garden walls, you’d have no idea.

The silvery-white side of a maple tree trunk covered in blotches of yellow-green sunburst lichen, and pale sea-green shield and oakmoss lichen has the contour of an eye looking out where a limb had probably been cut off in the past. Now it silently watches passersby in a small woodland patch near the local community college. Oh, the stories it could tell…

A pink rose petal fell onto the green leaf of another plant during a rainstorm a couple of weeks ago. Raindrops on everything. It’s October 5 and was still in the 80s Fahrenheit here today, when it should be in the 50s-60s and rainy most of the time.

A giant, gnarly old Oregon white oak tree towers into the blue sky. It’s green leaves are turning brown, as they do in the fall. But it’s 80F today, which has become alarmingly normal. Still! Nice day to greet this old friend.
