Thanks Barbara, I'm glad you were able to make it. It was a really fun time and has even gotten me thinking of new directions to look into :) #Genealogy

#AncestryHour I encourage everyone who is stuck in their #FamilyHistory or #genealogy to take a break, find the local newspapers, and just read them to see what's happening in the places your people lived. You don't have to have a formally registered #OnePlaceStudy. Just have fun exploring.

David Barnard has registered two #OnePlaceStudies with us, both of places in Wales: Llwydcoed One-Place Study in Glamorgan and Castle View, Pensarn One-Place Study in Denbighshire. #OnePlaceWednesday

Llwydcoed One-Place Study.
Image: An extract from an old, large scale Ordnance Survey map showing the dispersed settlement of Llwydcoed, with buildings, roads, railway lines, field boundaries, wooded areas, and old mining pits. The largest settlement, to the North, is Tre-Gibbon, with its own school and chapel. In the South-east corner of the map extract is Moriah Place, with a chapel and a pub named the Miners' Arms. The only church, dedicated to St James, stands alone at a road junction. Elsewhere, there is Llwydcoed Farm on the West side of the map extract, Llwydcoed Station on the railway, between the church and Tre-Gibbon, Llwydcoed House on the Southern edge of the map.

I wrote a short post about discovering the identities of two unknown people in a strange old family photo & how that led me to some migration-related surprises. #Genealogy #Wales #WelshHistory #FamilyHistory genealcymru.com/2026/09/18/l...

I just found my earliest evidence of marriage for a family I'm researching: their marriage license from 1746! I wish they were my ancestors, but they're still an interesting bunch. #Genealogy

As part of a fundraising initiative for 2wish.org.uk, I’ve selected a genealogy-related challenge. 74 short biographies of direct ancestors, with exactly 74 words each. This is the first instalment (including a link to donate if so inclined):

I've been playing with tithe maps from @thegenealogist.bsky.social. The plots marked in green were owned by my 4x GGF, William Bellamy (1784-1842). The map covers part of the tything of Elton in the parish of Westbury-on-Severn, Gloucestershire. (There's some OS map overlay showing.) #FamilyHistory

An overlay of 1839 tithe map with later Ordnance Survey shown faintly. Four plots are highlighted with green boundaries while red pins indicate each individual plot.

Part way through mapping out the mid-19th C. farm boundaries in Llanfair Clydogau for my #OnePlaceStudy & realised all these farms are leased by my 6x grandma's brother, his daughters, and his nieces and nephews... all at the same time. It's already like half the parish! #Genealogy

I just learned abt Katherine Philips the other day in relation to my #OnePlaceStudy. She wrote a poem abt a nobleman from Llanfair Clydogau. Also read a cool article abt her called Archipelagic Coterie Space: K. P. & Welsh Women's Writing. #Genealogy
