Something for Norfolk-based naturalists to keep a look out for this autumn. So far there is just a single county record (from New Buckenham Common)

Catching up with some Norfolk highlights from last week including the (non - ruled out on sonogram) promising-looking 'Eastern' Yellow Wagtail, splendid weevil off Sea Beet Lixus scabricollis and a rust on Sea Campion at Cley with PSL maestros @graemelyons.bsky.social and @andymus.bsky.social

First winter Yellow Wagtail off the East Bank at Cley looked good for Eastern but gave variably raspy called, maybe zippiest when chased by a Mipit and seemingly the sonogram VAR says noThe fine little weevil Lixus scabricollis that Graeme and Andy were confident we would find on the Sea beat along the beach. They had also tamed it, it seemsUromyces behenis on leaves of Silene uniflora along the beach

Still not found it in Norfolk!

I'm no expert on these Chris, but you might want to get that checked out for Spiny Hook-tip (Watsonalla uncincula). Think that patterning towards the wing-tip looks interesting @mothiduk.bsky.social

Nice bit of green stuff down Essex way

@andymus.bsky.socialOct 3, 2026, 7:54 PM

I've still never seen Pale LS. Got a Dusky last night though.

@andymus.bsky.socialSep 29, 2026, 8:29 PM

I've never had it here in Shotesham. Once at Horsey and a couple of times in Thetford (plus Scotland and Hampshire). Cracking moth.

Are there any Bristletail experts out there to advise on whether this is Trigoniophthalmus alternatus (Cave Bristletail). Seen in south Devon (& I've read now that it's a hot-spot nationally for the species). Looks good to us but expert help would be welcomed.

Trying the new mobile LED trap out in Cley last night. It works! 15/11 including 2 Mallow, Feathered Thorn, Black Rustic, Green-brindled Crescent, Sallow etc. Never had the Mallow in Shrewsbury. #teammoth

Do you have nature records in notebooks that you never look at and wonder what to do with? I've transcribed 10,000 records from the 1960-70s from a Welsh ornithological legend into @birdtrack.bsky.social and @cofnod.org.uk.

And it was fascinating...

Seems fairly seldom recorded. Was on a capped rubbish tip near the coast, so flower-rich brownfield type habitat. Only had the one in the pitfalls so not abundant perhaps

The craziest heads in natural history. Here's W. capito from Essex this spring (from a pitfall trap)

Always stay alert… Walking past some ivy on a southeast London street. My subconscious discerns a micromoth fizzing. Turns out to be Clepsis dumicolana. Turns out there are a dozen. Relatively recent, ivy-feeding colonist. And new for me.

I used a 5L water bottle from Asda. I cut (2) holes near the mouth and (2) flaps in the middle, the latter folded in and taped to each other. Other designs are available (and quite likely better!)

Thanks to @andymus.bsky.social and @ajcann.bsky.social, have joined the IKEA moth-trap club. With an added gizmo: a light sensor switch for ~£5. Will see what it captures tomorrow morning!
