Not to miss: Straub & Huillet's Antigone, at @metrographnyc.bsky.social at 2:35pm; their version of a John Ford Western, via Sophocles, Hölderlin, and Brecht; hieratic, furious, nature-rapt.

Yuliya Solntseva, in The Enchanted Desna, directs her late husband Oleksandr Dovzhenko's intricate, quasi-autobiographical script with ecstatic style and political ironies of her own; at @metrographnyc.bsky.social at 8:25pm, introduced by Anri Vartan:

You Can See Everything is an astonishing film of Elizabeth Holmes and her sustaining certainties, of the surprising emotional power arising from this round of Nathan Fielder's interventions:

Mikey Madison's performance in The Social Reckoning is akin to Jesse Eisenberg's in The Social Network, but it's pretty much squandered by indifferent direction, narrowly informational writing, and incuriosity; the movie has no spark of life:

I'll have the honor and pleasure of introducing Godard's Weekend at the Garden Theatre in Princeton, Sat, Oct. 10 at 7pm, in a terrific series including Kiarostami's Close-Up, Murnau's Faust, Mambéty's Touki Bouki, & much more; looking forward to being back (last visit was for Ira Sachs's Passages).

Just realized thanks to @screenslate.bsky.social that Luchino Visconti's last film, L'Innocente, is at the NYFF in a new restoration today at noon (sorry); also playing tomorrow and Friday; the refinement of its cruelty is sublime and chilling:

Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet's Sicilia! screens tonight (at @anthologyfilm.bsky.social at 8:15pm in 35mm.), aptly during the NYFF, where I first saw it, in 1999; word on this supreme later masterwork of family secrets and erotic history, plus reminiscences:

In honor and memory of Marjoe Gortner, who should have won an Oscar for Best Actor for his performance in Sarah Kernochan and Howard Smith's documentary Marjoe (which did win). Not that awards matter, but performance does, wherever it happens.

Small Change, François Truffaut's 1976 drama of kinder mores and changing times (with a wink of wishful thinking and a hint of bitter memories built in), at @metrographnyc.bsky.social at 11 in 35mm. (sorry for late word:

Miklós Jancsó, in Electra, My Love, does what Christopher Nolan didn't—makes clear the relentlessly cruel violence of the Homeric world, and endows that world with pageantry and style nonetheless; it's at @metrographnyc.bsky.social at 9:15pm:

The other day, someone asked about Spencer Tracy's best performance, and my brain said Man's Castle but my heart said The Actress (and recalled George Cukor's great showcases for the highest refinements of Tracy's art); it's on @tcmtv.bsky.social at 10:15am:
