The UK economy spends £4bn a year removing invasive species like cherry laurel, yet it can still be sold in garden centres. Cherry laurel is easily spread, forming dense clumps in woodlands, releasing cyanide, and shading out other species. We'd like to see it banned.

Two interesting things: 1. by 1964 the squirrels in nature books and public perception were already Grey. 2. the Rooks collecting acorns. Jays get all the press for dispersing and planting acorns, but Rooks do it a lot too, and are likely also very important dispersers of oaks. Magpies too.

The new (slightly revised) Red List of European Moths has been published by the EU. A summary and links to downloads can be found on our website. Moths play a vital role in ecosystems and there is also an important new document on how to plan for their conservation

Surprised to see a couple of Red Admirals heading out to sea this am at Swanage, heading east towards the Isle of Wight (just visible in the mist). Cloudy but 19C.

Are they heading east for the shorter crossing across the channel? Or just a holiday on a distant isle? @dorsetbutterflies.bsky.social

In a major win for entomology, the buff-tailed bumblebee has been selected to feature on the next series of Bank of England banknotes 🐝

Its inclusion highlights the vital role of pollinators and brings one of the UK’s most recognisable insects into the pockets of millions.

Earth's energy imbalance
The difference between amount of energy Earth receives from the sun and amount it radiates outward into space
has more than doubled over past 2 decades, massively exceeding increase predicted by climate models.
