Surprised to see a couple of Red Admirals heading out to sea this am at Swanage, heading east towards the Isle of Wight (just visible in the mist). Cloudy but 19C.

Are they heading east for the shorter crossing across the channel? Or just a holiday on a distant isle? @dorsetbutterflies.bsky.social

There has been an influx of Convolvulus Hawks Agrius convolvuli in southern England over the last week. Worth checking Nicotiana plants at dusk for these amazing moths. I often grow these flowers especially to attract them - some photos from previous years.

A bonus transect walk at Lorton Meadows yesterday - still lots of Clouded Yellow, incl helice. And some very smart, fresh looking Small Copper, aside from the one pictured left, centre row, who, though faded and raggedy was still full of feisty Small Copper energy. 🦋

A selection of the butterflies recorded on the Transect route at DWT Lorton Meadows, Weymouth on 3.10.2026.

Although the transect season is over there are still so many butterflies on the wing, we are continuing to record.

Still lots of Clouded Yellow around, including helice females. And some very smart, fresh looking Small Copper butterflies, aside from the one pictured left, centre row, who, though faded and raggedy was still very much full of feisty Small Copper energy.

Yesterday I recorded 32 Clouded Yellow (there were many more off route), 11 Small Copper, plus Common Blue, Speckled Wood, Red Admiral, Peacock and a Painted Lady.

I watched a female Holly blue today, very busy amongst Ivy flowers on a sunny wall in Swanage. I don't think I have ever seen one as late in the year.

Long-tailed Blue alert. Another Dorset sighting, this time on Brownsea Island. Keep an eye out for these rare migrants. www.dorsetbutterflies.com/2026/10/long...

Had a interesting encounter with my fave #butterfly at Lorton Meadows, Weymouth. 🦋

Could this be Small Copper courtship with the wing fluttering akin to batting eyelashes? Or perhaps it's a go-away message?

Does anyone speak Small Copper?

I'm still seeing clouded yellows wherever I go and I think they look even more beautiful against the Autumn colours.

Enjoyable walk at Durlston Country Park lunchtime even though a little overcast. Highlights - lots of Hummingbird hawk-moth on budliea, late Adonis Blue and lovely 3rd gen Wall. @dorsetbutterflies.bsky.social

Rather amazing to hear of this very late Grayling sighting at Arne yesterday, less surprising is Wall which seem to be having a good third brood in the south of the County www.dorsetbutterflies.com/2026/09/gray...

Large numbers of Clouded Yellows on my Durlston East transect. Last week we counted 44 including 3 Helice, and I was told by the rangers at Durlston that they counted over 70 on the Durlston West transect. @savebutterflies.bsky.social @dorsetbutterflies.bsky.social @dorsetwildlife.bsky.social

Even with an onshore breeze and intermittent 🌞 at Southbourne lunchtime I still managed to count 59 Clouded Yellows on our Seafront transect. On the undercliff sectons many were sheltering from the wind among the grass. @dorsetbutterflies.bsky.social

Wow, that’s a lot of butterflies and may be a record for a UK transect! I feel sure this year will break all records for this migrant species? @ukbms.bsky.social @dorsetbutterflies.bsky.social @savebutterflies.bsky.social @richardfoxbc.bsky.social

Painted Ladies are gathering along the Dorset coast today, having vanished from my garden a few weeks ago. They will head south to France at altitude, probably waiting for favourable winds that are due tomorrow @dorsetbutterflies.bsky.social

104/30 in the Upton garden traps this morning, albeit 1/2 of which were LYU. Notables incl'd another Golden Twin-spot, plus Pediasia contaminella & Acrobasis suavella, whilst Autumnal Rustic & Brindled Green were NFY. A box fresh SM Willow was my 1st in a while too #TeamMoth @dorsetmoths.bsky.social

A grey coloured and narrowly arrowhead shaped Small Mottled Willow moth rests, facing the camera, on a grey egg box. The moth is marbled with black & brown tones, and has a large orange-brown stigma in the centre of each forewing.A capuchino coloured Autumnal Rustic moth rests, facing upwards, on a grey egg box. The moth has several rectangular dark brown marks along the edge of each forewing and large black eyes.A densely vermiculated black, green, and brown Brindled Green moth rests, facing upwards and seen obliquely in profile, on a grey egg box.A cylindrical and brown coloured Pediasia contaminella (Rolled Grass-moth) rests, facing right, on a grey egg box. Seen in profile, the moth is diagnostically holding its abdomen raised up at a shallow angle.

Experimenting with my new camera, trying to get upperside photos of Clouded Yellows at Durlston last Wednesday. Not easy and much to learn, and will have to try out different settings to get the best results. @savebutterflies.bsky.social @dorsetbutterflies.bsky.social @dorsetwildlife.bsky.social

Thanks for the alert, I guess that’s not so far away for a migrant butterfly. Shame such releases spoil our understanding of these butterflies
