Delighted to have contributed to the latest issue of Renewal. I’m in it discussing how children talk today, how that’s changed since the postwar period, and what that means for progressive politics.

For the new @ippr.org Progressive Review, we asked members of the 2024 intake of MPs to reflect on the fundamental purpose of progressive politics. Patrick Hurley MP @patrickhurley.bsky.social argues that progressive politics is about redistributing power:

The UK with joint highest current growth and lowest forecast deficit in the G7 is… um… not what you might imagine from reading the newspaper.

I’ve written an essay on energy costs in this new @thefabians.bsky.social collection on growth. This was written before Labour Conference and the announcement of GB grid, but I think my argument still applies!

But his comments on the @therestpolitics.bsky.social podcast have prompted Farage to opine about Brexit AND Russia – two issues on which he is exposed

We're in the midst of a massive crisis of epistemic authority and social trust, with much of the online information ecosystem basically collapsing into an algorithmic swirl of unverifiable rumour, and Wikipedia is one of the few institutions holding out. Attacking it is stupid and irresponsible.

@npjgarland.bsky.socialOct 12, 2026, 2:37 PM

What it shouldn't mean is pretending every socially or politically desirable thing is part of a growth strategy. Keep those dividing lines clean, simple, and persuasive.

@npjgarland.bsky.socialOct 12, 2026, 2:37 PM

Being clear about what that story is matters. New Labour had one really clear answer: the knowledge economy meant investment in human capital was crucial to growth. That mattered because it aligned progressive values and economic growth, and allowed Labour to explain trade-offs made elsewhere.
