A strong Green Party voice is essential in politics – more so now than ever, in the face of the ever more urgent climate crisis. A big thank you to Zack and all the Green campaigners who helped significantly increase the Green vote share in Holborn and St Pancras💚

But there is hope. Nature can recover when given the chance. We know what works; what we need now is genuine leadership from the UK govt to take bold, meaningful action to turn things around.

We’re losing nature faster than ever before. The Living Planet Report reveals the scale of the challenge facing our natural world, from the wildlife and habitats we love to the ecosystems that provide the food, water and climate stability we all depend on.

This practice not only undermines the ability of shoppers to make informed choices and support British producers, but also places yet more strain on small family farmers when many are already struggling to cope.

I've written to the govt about a concern causing real frustration across North Herefordshire: the practice of "farmwashing," where supermarkets use misleading marketing to suggest produce comes from British family farms - when it has actually come from overseas.

Dear Angela,

I am writing about a growing concern in North Herefordshire that is causing real frustration among farmers and consumers alike: the practice widely referred to as “farmwashing”, whereby supermarkets utilise misleading marketing tactics to suggest produce has been sourced from British family farms - when it has actually come from overseas.

This issue has particular resonance in my constituency. North Herefordshire is home to many family farms, and local residents care strongly about supporting British food and farming. Yet there is increasing concern that this public support for British farmers is being manipulated and misused by major supermarkets who engage in “farmwashing” tactics, profiting from imagery and marketing that creates a false impression of where food comes from. These practices not only undermine the ability of consumers to make informed choices and support British producers, but also place yet more strain on small family farmers at a time when many are already struggling to cope with the devastating impacts of climate breakdown-induced extreme weather events, and with rising fuel and fertiliser costs due to the illegal war on Iran.

I would therefore be grateful if you would work with retailers and standards bodies to ensure that food labelling is accurate, clear, and not misleading to consumers - including in relation to country of origin and packaging design. I also ask that you consider whether further guidance or stronger rules are needed to prevent branding practices which create a false impression of British or local origin, and that you meet with me and farmers in North Herefordshire who have been directly affected by farmwashing practices to discuss any further support needed from government to combat this issue.

I would additionally welcome the opportunity to discuss not only food labelling, but the wider pressures on family farms, including the impacts of climate breakdown and the need for greater government support to m…

The Conservatives want to spend ÂŁ10 billion on a 'British Iron Dome'. Dr Ellie Chowns says real security starts with facing where the real threats are - and top of the list is the climate crisis.

The horrific violence of the October 7th attacks must never be forgotten. Today and every day I stand in solidarity with Jewish communities against antisemitism.

I am deeply saddened that the "Zionism is Racism" motion has passed.

As Greens, we will always uphold universal human rights.

We will never tolerate any form of discrimination or harassment.

We will continue to stand in opposition to genocide, ethnic cleansing, apartheid and the illegal occupation.

We will continue to call out the heinous crimes of the Netanyahu government.

And we will continue to work to ensure that the Green Party is an anti-racist party in every way.

We know there is no conflict between supporting the rights of Palestinians and the rights of Jewish people.

While ordinary families struggle to afford the essentials, the super-rich continue to grow their wealth to ever-more obscene figures, propped up by our unfair tax system. I've written to the Chancellor pressing him to follow the Green Party's example and take urgent action to tax wealth fairly.

It couldn't be more critical to get more Green voices in Parliament - and with only 6 days until the by-election in Holborn and St Pancras, we need as many Green activists as possible to join us in the campaign to get Zack Polanski elected!

A fairer voting system can't wait until after the next general election. We need electoral reform now.

WE NEED FAIR VOTING BEFORE THE NEXT ELECTION

ELLIE CHOWNS
MP FOR NORTH HEREFORDSHIRE

"The PM cannot acknowledge the unfairness of a system capable of handing power to a government with a minority of the vote share, and then say the answer is to let that happen exactly once more before he fixes it.

Burnham must act with urgency to immediately jumpstart the National Commission, guarantee timely progress, and ensure its recommendations are delivered in time for a fairer voting system to be in place at the next general election."

Today’s speech from the Chancellor shows Labour offering more of the same. We need real action to tackle extreme wealth inequality in this country and make the super-rich pay their fair share.

Headline reads: “It’s time to tackle extreme wealth inequality.”
Quote from Ellie Chowns, MP for North Herefordshire:
“The Chancellor used his speech today to repeatedly stress a message of new leadership offering new hope, yet when it came to the substance behind the rhetoric, Britain was once again left with more of the same.
“He made no mention of the extraordinary wealth inequality holding our country back, nor did he state any ambitions for fair taxation of wealth.
“A government serious about fixing our economy cannot afford to look the other way while the uber-rich accumulate ever-more wealth and dodge paying their fair share.”
