16 Apr 2021. Autumn in Te-Tai Tokerau | Northland. When we first moved here, we heard this region referred as the ‘Winterless North’ and considered this as an eventual settling down point. The photo was taken on a solitary jaunt up the West Coast and onwards to Te Rerenga Wairua | Cape Reinga. Along a stretch of lonely road near Tāheke in the area known as Te Kohanga o Te Tai Tokerau or Te Puna o Te Ao Maram | Hokianga, a lone barn in a large field prompted a stop. The lushest verdant grass I reckon I’ve ever seen dominates the landscape. In the centre of the picture is a metal barn with a curved roof. A small shed is immediately to the left of it. It appears a plastic water cistern is inside the shed, and in front of it, a watering trough. In a mural covering the front door/wall is someone riding a horse. The horse is in mid-gallop, and the rider’s right arm is outstretched over their head, hat in hand. Behind horse and rider are shades of dark blue with a setting yellow sun as a halo behind the rider. The word “WELCOME” is painted in black letters just below the curved roof. A low, loosely spaced wooden fence line rambles along through various points of the property. Several smaller trees and shrubs dot the scene. In the distance, there are rolling hills. They are laid back and cruisy under a blue sky swimming with large white and grey clouds.

Another season passes us by
