A roughly bust-length painting of a little girl, close up, with white skin, blue eyes, and light brown hair. She wears a blue cloth head covering and is wrapped in a rough brown blanket. With her right arm she cradles an empty brown handled basket, on the top edge of which rests her left hand. Her head is tipped so that her right cheek rests against the basket handle as she gazes at the viewer. On a little table at the lower left a small pile of oranges (4 are visible) sits on a white cloth. The top of one of the fruits is lopped off to expose a cross-section of the interior.

“Shelter” by Danielle Mckinney (American) - Oil on linen / 2023 - Rose Art Museum (Waltham, Massachusetts) #WomenInArt #WomensArt #WomanArtist #WomenArtists #DanielleMckinney #BlackArt #AfricanAmericanArt #BlackWomenInArt #Mckinney #OilPainting #art #artText #arte #BrandeisUniversity #RoseArtMuseum

American artist Danielle Mckinney’s paintings often give Black women something art history has too rarely granted them: uninterrupted time to rest, think, dream, and simply inhabit their own interior worlds. Trained first as a photographer, Mckinney brings a cinematic sense of framing and pause to paintings that can feel like film stills of moments already in progress, observed without explanation. In “Shelter,” the title suggests protection, but the refuge is not represented as a room or physical enclosure. Instead, it seems to reside in the woman’s inward attention and in the intimate space created between her hand and a butterfly.

A Black woman appears in profile against a broad olive-brown field, leaning forward with her chin resting in one hand. Her short dark hair forms a smooth rounded silhouette, while a voluminous cream garment wraps her shoulders and body in loose, luminous folds. She extends two coral-painted fingertips toward an orange-and-black butterfly hovering just beyond her face. Warm highlights catch her eyes, cheeks, lips, and nails, drawing us toward the tiny encounter. With no furniture or setting visible, the woman, hand, and butterfly seem suspended in a quiet, concentrated space.

The insect is often associated with change, fragility, freedom, or brief beauty, yet Mckinney does not force a fixed story. The encounter remains private and open-ended. That resistance to interruption is central to Mckinney’s work. She has described painting as a “spiritual act” and each canvas as a portal for exploring the soul, the self, and freedom within one’s own space.

“Shelter” was included in Danielle Mckinney: Tell Me More at the Rose Art Museum, her first solo U.S. museum exhibition which brought together 13 paintings centered on Black women’s interior lives, autonomy, beauty, and resilience. The restrained palette, isolated figure, and minute butterfly turn an ordinary gesture of attention into a moment in which stillness itself becomes shelter.

By Zinaida Serebriakova (1884-1967), Green Autumn Landscape, 1908, oil on canvas, 43.4 x 45 cm, Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow. #art #womanartist #womenartists #painting #oilpainting

From Byron’s Muse on Wordpress: ‘“Green Autumn Landscape”, shows an early autumn scene. Nearly the entire canvas shows a vast field stretching on and on in long, neverending vertical lines. Three windmills break up the space for the moment but then the fields spread on more and more in the distance. The sky is light grey and quiet. No crows are restlessly, nervously flying low above the fields, but still there is a sense of foreboding because we know that the fogs will soon descent and hover above the fields, that the green that is so pleasant to the eyes will turn to brown soil. To me, this painting represents autumn’s sense of desolation, painted in a very simple but beautiful way. It also brings to mind many landscapes by Vincent Van Gogh.”

Born on October 26, 1862, at Karlberg Palace in Solna, Sweden, she was raised in an aristocratic family of naval officers and cartographers. From her upbringing, she inherited a lifelong interest in mathematics, geometry, and botany.
She was among the early generations of women allowed to study at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, graduating with honors in 1887.
For years, she maintained a successful, conventional career painting naturalistic landscapes, portraits, and botanical illustrations to achieve financial independence.
Following the tragic death of her 10-year-old sister Hermina, af Klint deeply immersed herself in spiritualism, Theosophy, and Anthroposophy.
In 1896, she co-founded a secretive group of five women artists known as "De Fem" (The Five). They met weekly for séances, prayers, and meditation, practicing automatic writing and drawing to communicate with entities they called the "High Masters".
During a séance in 1904, a spirit guide named Amaliel commissioned af Klint to paint a monumental series on the astral plane.
Between 1906 and 1915, working in radical secrecy, she created The Paintings for the Temple—a breathtaking cycle of 193 abstract works. This monumental feat predated the famous abstract breakthroughs of Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, and Kazimir Malevich by several years.
These works were distinct for their massive scale, vibrant colors, biomorphic spirals, and precise geometric shapes. For example, in The Swan series, she heavily utilized dualistic symbolism—black and white representing opposites, yellow for the masculine spirit, and blue for the feminine.
