Born on October 26, 1862, at Karlberg Palace in Solna, Sweden, she was raised in an aristocratic family of naval officers and cartographers. From her upbringing, she inherited a lifelong interest in mathematics, geometry, and botany.
She was among the early generations of women allowed to study at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, graduating with honors in 1887.
For years, she maintained a successful, conventional career painting naturalistic landscapes, portraits, and botanical illustrations to achieve financial independence.
Following the tragic death of her 10-year-old sister Hermina, af Klint deeply immersed herself in spiritualism, Theosophy, and Anthroposophy.
In 1896, she co-founded a secretive group of five women artists known as "De Fem" (The Five). They met weekly for séances, prayers, and meditation, practicing automatic writing and drawing to communicate with entities they called the "High Masters".
During a séance in 1904, a spirit guide named Amaliel commissioned af Klint to paint a monumental series on the astral plane.
Between 1906 and 1915, working in radical secrecy, she created The Paintings for the Temple—a breathtaking cycle of 193 abstract works. This monumental feat predated the famous abstract breakthroughs of Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, and Kazimir Malevich by several years.
These works were distinct for their massive scale, vibrant colors, biomorphic spirals, and precise geometric shapes. For example, in The Swan series, she heavily utilized dualistic symbolism—black and white representing opposites, yellow for the masculine spirit, and blue for the feminine.

Here is one of the best-known depictions of the Battle of Lepanto in October 1571.

(Lepanto is today's Nafpaktos in western Greece; Ottoman Turkish: İnebahtı)

The image represents the Holy League’s victory over the Ottoman fleet.
mage: Ignazio Danti, Battle of Lepanto, c. 1580, fresco, Gallery of Geographical Maps, Vatican Museums, Vatican City, based on a 1572 engraving by Fernando Bertelli.
The Ottoman conquest of Cyprus was the immediate trigger for the formation of the Holy League.

The victory has traditionally been portrayed as a decisive triumph of Christian Europe over Ottoman expansion and a symbolic turning point in the Mediterranean.
Recent scholarship has challenged the traditional portrayal of Lepanto as a decisive turning point. It has emphasized its limited immediate strategic consequences and the Ottomans’ rapid reconstruction of their naval power.
Here are three references:
On the conventional narrative and how this interpretation was itself shaped by early modern Catholic political and religious discourse:

On Lepanto's long-lasting impact on European literature, art, diplomacy, and representations of Muslims:

#earlymodern ads are never boring!

This week's research topic was 'Vapours' in women. The first remedy ad is for Saccharum Martis, or Sugar of Steel.

Interestingly, sold at the Angel in Corn Hill (= Nath. Brooke) and Mrs Martins in the Barbican.

9 October 1583: The Catholic gentlewoman Margery Throckmorton writes to one of her sons, probably Francis, from Lewisham. We've already seen Francis as a visitor to the French embassy (as revealed by Walsingham's spy inside the embassy) and involved with Mary queen of Scots' ...

HEADLINES:

~ Of the 30,000 wills in our sample, about 8,000 of them mention rings.
~ For reasons, many more rings than that are actually bequeathed within the wills (chiefly because people bequeath many mourning rings at a time)

Visited the UK National Archives in Kew today. Saw the Revolution 250 exhibition. Interesting for my own research on Jacob van Braam. He fought with George Washington in 1764 but as a loyalist in 1776. Was on campaign in St. Augustine (Florida) and Georgia.

8 October 1583: The fourth edition of John Foxe's 'Actes and Monuments', aka Foxe's Book of Martyrs, is published some time this month. I don't think Foxe has yet appeared on this account; he's in his late sixties now, and I think working abroad. This is the last edition Foxe ...
