A new location for this collector, and so a new wall for my Shell painting. Love how it dominates the neutral space.

Wojciech Fangor (November 15, 1922 – October 25, 2015) was a world-renowned Polish painter, graphic artist, and sculptor. He remains celebrated as one of the most influential pioneers of postwar Op Art (Optical Art) and a master of spatial abstraction.
Born in Warsaw, Fangor secretly trained under famous painters Tadeusz Pruszkowski and Felicjan Szczęsny Kowarski during the German occupation of Poland. He graduated from the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts in 1946.
n the early 1950s, he initially aligned with state-mandated Socialist Realism, painting iconic works such as Figures (1950) and Korean Mother (1951).
Concurrently, he became a co-founder of the highly influential Polish Poster School, utilizing dynamic graphic compositions and photo-collage elements for cultural and cinema advertisements.
Disillusioned by traditional figurative styles, Fangor pivoted dramatically toward geometric abstraction. Alongside architect Stanisław Zamecznik, he created Studium Przestrzeni (Study of Space), which is widely recognized as Poland’s first environmental art installation.
Through the late 1950s and 1960s, Fangor perfected his most iconic technique. By meticulously painting circles and waves with soft, blurred borders, he caused colors to visually bleed and expand into the viewer's physical field of vision. This optical illusion created an impression of light and motion pulsing straight off the canvas.
Fangor emigrated from Poland in 1961, traveling through Europe before moving to the United States in 1966.
His unique bridge between pure eye-tricks and the depth of Color Field painting caught the attention of Western curators. He was the only Polish artist included in MoMA’s landmark 1965 exhibition The Responsive Eye.
In 1970, he became the first and only Polish artist to receive a monographic, solo exhibition at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York.
During his time in America, he taught at institutions including Fairleigh Dickinson University and Harvard University.

Born on October 26, 1862, at Karlberg Palace in Solna, Sweden, she was raised in an aristocratic family of naval officers and cartographers. From her upbringing, she inherited a lifelong interest in mathematics, geometry, and botany.
She was among the early generations of women allowed to study at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, graduating with honors in 1887.
For years, she maintained a successful, conventional career painting naturalistic landscapes, portraits, and botanical illustrations to achieve financial independence.
Following the tragic death of her 10-year-old sister Hermina, af Klint deeply immersed herself in spiritualism, Theosophy, and Anthroposophy.
In 1896, she co-founded a secretive group of five women artists known as "De Fem" (The Five). They met weekly for séances, prayers, and meditation, practicing automatic writing and drawing to communicate with entities they called the "High Masters".
During a séance in 1904, a spirit guide named Amaliel commissioned af Klint to paint a monumental series on the astral plane.
Between 1906 and 1915, working in radical secrecy, she created The Paintings for the Temple—a breathtaking cycle of 193 abstract works. This monumental feat predated the famous abstract breakthroughs of Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, and Kazimir Malevich by several years.
These works were distinct for their massive scale, vibrant colors, biomorphic spirals, and precise geometric shapes. For example, in The Swan series, she heavily utilized dualistic symbolism—black and white representing opposites, yellow for the masculine spirit, and blue for the feminine.

“Marketing” by Chia Yu Chian (Malaysian) - Oil on canvas / 1971 - National Gallery Singapore (Singapore) #WomenInArt #ChiaYuChian #NationalGallerySingapore #MalaysianArt #AsianArt #WomenAtWork #ModernArt #art #artText #arte #SocialRealism #Modernism #1970sArt #MalaysianArtist #SoutheastAsianArt

Malaysian artist Chia Yu Chian turns an everyday transaction into a densely observed portrait of social life. Rather than monumentalizing a single person, he lets individuals overlap, bend, wait, examine goods, converse, and negotiate within a shared public space. The title “Marketing” uses an older sense of the word like “going to market to buy provisions.” Women dominate the scene, appearing as shoppers, vendors, and participants in the informal economy that sustained daily urban life.

A crowded open-air market fills this vertical oil painting with women, produce, and overlapping bodies. Closest to us, a dark-haired woman in a vivid coral-red top sits with her back turned, her patterned skirt spreading across the lower edge. Nearby is vendor in brown seated behind baskets and low tables overflowing with bananas, leafy vegetables, red and green fruit, and other goods. Behind them, women cluster closely together: one in a lavender headscarf and white clothing raises a hand toward her face, while others wear yellow, turquoise, green, pink, and patterned garments. Faces emerge and disappear among the tightly packed figures. A pale mint-green background surrounds the group, intensifying the saturated colors and compressed bustle of the market.

Born in Johor in 1936, Chia developed his practice between Malaysia, Singapore, and Paris. He studied privately with Nanyang painter Chen Wen Hsi before receiving a French government scholarship to study at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. After returning to Malaysia, Chia increasingly focused on ordinary people and the rapidly changing life of Kuala Lumpur. His later paintings became especially attentive to workers, street vendors, families, hospital patients, and others rarely treated as heroic subjects. In “Marketing,” thick outlines, flattened space, and exuberant color transform a familiar market into a record of human proximity: noisy, crowded, imperfect, and alive.
