Thanks, Graham. In the EU, #PlayEnergetic is used in courses at @ucddublin.bsky.social and University of Oradea, with sets also owned by Cambridge and Bath.

We were supposed to be adding hydrogen *faster* than solar was added. See graph on the right.

Coming back to our project #PlayEnergetic, which includes the 'offshore wind + hydrogen' combo that remains the default 24/7/365 zero carbon RE plan in EU & UK models: as Julian Allwood puts it, we haven't got any hydrogen. China still working on it. www.break-down.org/the-machine/

Western capital has already rendered its verdict: decisions stall in hydrogen investment, carbon-capture projects die in development, cancellations accumulate for small modular reactors. The advantages of the machine are most acutely visible here. It reliably manufactures and delivers the critical ingredient for success: demand certainty. When the state is the customer, the offtaker and the banker all at once, an industry with no market can be willed into being. China’s hydrogen, large-scale storage and next-generation nuclear sectors are now running that experiment at scale, but the results will take years to read. Whether the experiment produces functioning industries or white elephants is an open question. The machine has built both before and continues to do so despite the risks. The Chinese state can be very patient—even to excess—when it has set a priority.

“Tipping points can also work in our favour,” he said. The rapid growth of solar power, wind power and electric vehicles, as well as the recovery of some natural systems, showed beneficial change could accelerate after reaching a critical threshold.

However, the transition to clean power is being impeded by slow planning and grid expansion, particularly in wealthier economies, and a severe lack of investment elsewhere. Africa receives less than 2% of global clean energy investment despite possessing 60% of the world’s best solar resources, according to the report.

Research cited in the analysis suggests coordinated policies supporting clean power, transport and heating could bring forward tipping points in those sectors by between two and eight years. Progress in one sector makes the others easier by increasing demand for clean electricity, encouraging investment and driving costs down further.
