The number of people who desire changes may be many, but the number of people willing to strive for any such change through sustained work is relatively few. In this sense, everyone doing sustained work belongs to a minority, and to strive for change is always to be in a minority within a majority.

If you want to efficiently cultivate a well-informed, bird's-eye view of the ecosystem of election defense work being done in these fascist times, and which orgs are doing much of it, then read this outstanding piece by Marcy Rein and Sandra Hinson.

With ICE shooting our neighbors, it's as important as ever to stand in community outside the Metropolitan Detention Center, where they hold 100s of our neighbors in custody.

James Tracy has long been a model to me of what a movement intellectual can do in the world. It was awesome to talk to him about my new book *White Flank.* The interview is now live @convergencemag.com. @surj.org @kutalik.bsky.social

Increasing the OIG budget is an important step, but meaningless without a appointing an Inspector General who is not afraid of holding the NYPD accountable and who has a track record of collaborating with organizations working to end police violence. That seat is still empty, 10mos into his admin.

Some days when I feel resentful about having spent years explaining that criminalization is the fuel of fascism which is why we have to reject criminalization, I remember that perhaps the time I say it might be the first time someone has considered the idea. So I keep saying it and keep organizing.

Today, we honor Indigenous Peoples' culture, history, and resilience to western colonization. We recognize their role as stewards of the land we call home, and call for the return and reparations of their ancestral land.

My cousin organized a series of masked concerts in NYC so immunocompromised and other covid-conscious folks can still enjoy live music events, and is raising funds so he can keep doing so!

Love and appreciation to anyone able to chip in 🙏🏾♥️

"You came to our home. You said you would be a different kind of mayor. We feel betrayed by you. Jessica Tisch is your police commissioner. She let Alongi retire without even going through with a trial. It seems like you're just letting this happen." —Notan Eva Costa, mother of Win Rozario

I appreciate your dedication to this program and your sustained fundraising efforts. My cash flow is super-tight until the first week of December, but I commit to making a contribution then.

There are many reasons that I wanted to start a program like REBUILD. Over the years, when incarcerated comrades returned home, they would ask for counseling/therapy resources that were culturally competent. I only ever had a couple of local resources for them when I lived in Chicago.

The demand to prosecute federal agents is problematic because it advocates a carceral approach to address a carceral problem. The other demands, however, are justified and constructive. Publicly pressuring one's elected allies to use governing power to try to stop police collusion with ICE is good.

I think that people who explicitly sign up to DO politics as a JOB should be told at every turn by the people who they represent when they suck at their job.

National Coming Out Day is way deeper than a social media trend. October 11th was chosen because it’s the anniversary of the 1987 March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights.

[Photo of QUEER AND HOW WE GOT HERE page 36]
“In the 1980s, the AIDS epidemic began ravaging the gay community. Gay organizations made heroic efforts to care for the sick, but the Reagan administration’s response was murderously slow. Being out, loud, and public was a way to cut through stigma, media silence, and government neglect.”
[reproduction of a poster which reads “Fighting For Our Lives: An AIDS Candlelight March, May 2, 1983. It’s illustrated with a drawing of a man in a sweater crying and holding up a candle.]
“In 1987, more than half a million people joined the March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. The AIDS Memorial Quilt visualized the tragedy with grave-sized panels, sewn by loved ones, spread over the National Mall.”
[Drawing of people walking around the AIDS quilt. One of the panels is visibly labeled “Rock Hudson.”]
[Drawing of Narrator-Hazel, commenting on the page.]
“The quilt was first displayed with 1,920 panels and has since expanded to almost 50,000 panels—a fraction of the mounting deaths.”

“More men were ‘outed’ by illness than had ever come out before—even celebrities at the highest echelons.[Photo of QUEER AND HOW WE GOT HERE page 37]
“The march also introduced the nation to ACT UP, a group fighting for their lives for treatments to be developed faster. Their motto: ‘United in anger and committed to direct action to end the AIDS crisis.’”
[Illustration of a bloc of ACT UP marchers carrying a banner that says “SILENCE = DEATH.” Next to them, a guy in a wheelchair holds a sign saying “ACT UP: AIDS Coalition To Unleash Power.” Other marchers hold up protest signs with Reagan’s face and “AIDSGATE” written underneath, and a sign with a pink triangle, evoking the holocaust. Together, the marchers shout: “Act up! Fight Back! Fight AIDS!”]

“Following the march, activists formed ACT UP direct-action chapters all over the country.”

“Jean O’Leary and Robert Eichberg proposed National Coming Out Day for October 11, the anniversary of the march.
[Drawing of Jean O’Leary talking]
“As long as the overwhelming majority of our community remains closeted, we will continue to be dismissed.”

[Drawing of Robert Eichberg talking]
“With Coming Out Day happening, we can expect this country to go through some real self-examination.”

When I was at Princeton, the reigning assumption in its philosophy dept about the relation b/t language-use + semantics was that the former "represented" the latter. Today, more agree that meaning derives from use; a similar lesson must be now learned about money's politically derived content.
