Established in 2001, UCD Humanities Institute is the University’s principal hub for interdisciplinary enquiry and discussion in the humanities, as well as collaboration between the humanities and other areas of social and scientific research.
...with the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation’s Reimar Lüst Award in 2020, and the Irish Research Council’s Researcher of the Year Award in 2022.
Alongside visiting professorships and fellowships at Harvard University, Princeton University, SciencesPo and various German universities, his contributions to research have also been recognised...
He received a European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant in 2008, and is currently completing his ERC Advanced Grant project, CivilWars.
An elected member of the Royal Irish Academy (RIA) and Academia Europaea, Professor Gerwarth has authored five prize-winning monographs translated into more than 30 languages.
She also paid tribute to outgoing Director Professor Anne Fuchs for her “outstanding leadership, dedication, and tremendous contributions to the Institute”.

Welcoming the appointment, UCD Vice-President for Research, Innovation and Impact Professor Kate Robson Brown said that as “an internationally renowned scholar, Robert brings extraordinary vision..."
He will also seek to deepen existing global partnerships, encourage collaboration between research clusters, Colleges and Research Institutes, and develop relationships with institutional partners in Ireland, Europe and beyond.
During his tenure as director, he plans to establish an international advisory board and expand the Institute’s funded visiting fellows scheme to bring leading scholars in the Humanities and Social Sciences to University College Dublin.
“I aim to pursue the development of UCD Humanities Institute into a globally recognised Institute for Advanced Study with a particular focus in the Humanities, but with an openness to enabling collaborations across all disciplines.”
“My vision for the Humanities Institute involves building on the excellent work of my predecessor, Prof Anne Fuchs, by further increasing its national and international visibility over the next five years,” he said, speaking on his appointment.
A Professor of Modern History at UCD School of History and founding Director of UCD Centre for War Studies, Robert is the first academic from Ireland to hold the prestigious position of Kluge Chair in the Countries and Cultures of the North at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC.
