"Very good," said the Doctor, turning around. "Let's begin." He took the stethoscope, as usual, and placed it on her chest, pulling the cloth down a few inches to get it onto her heart. He leaned in close, listening intently. She tried very hard to breathe slowly and keep her poor heart beating at a normal rate, but she could feel it racing and she knew he could hear it as well. "Good girl," he said, then paused to write on his clipboard. Then he --- she wasn't sure how she was going to be able to stand it --- moved the stethoscope around to her back. *My back... I'm... there's nothing...*, her mind stumbled on itself, trying to put the fear into words.

It was like seeing a place in the daytime that had been terrifying at night, and now you realized it was a completely normal, boring place. Claire remembered when she was little, and scared by the strange, shapeless shadows that filled her room every night. Her mother had told her, this is just what the dark does, but it's still the same room as it was in the daylight. This made Claire feel a little better. Then Dad told her about how when *he* was a little boy, every night he saw a row of mysterious hooded figures standing in the closet, watching, waiting, their faces hidden in their hoods. And then every morning they turned out to be only a bunch of short sleeve shirts hanging in the closet. Their hoods were the sleeves. *This* had not made Claire feel better at all. *I need to tell Myst about that one,* Claire said to herself.
