If the door reminded her a little of high school, stepping into the waiting room and lobby was like going back in time. You couldn't have planned this place to look more... like itself... than it did. It reminded her of school, of going to the DMV, it reminded her of how the county health department looked when she'd had to go there to take mandatory food safety training before she could get her first job.

When she was 16, Liz was the cashier at Pizza Dee-Luxe, a mom-and-pop operation. Literally, the co-owners were a married couple in their fifties. In spite of the county-mandated training, Liz rarely actually handled food. Mr. Civitelli did most of the scheduling and assigning of employees' shifts, as well as making the dough personally, and he preferred to keep the girls out front on the cash register where the customers could see them, not in the back making pizza and definitely not out on the roads delivering pizzas.

Mr. C believed in keeping girls safe, he said, and his idea of "safety" was things like his dress code for female employees, which included rules like "none of those tops that tie in the back, because all the fellas have to do is untie it and there ya go!" She wasn't sure if he also lectured the "fellas" not to be untying anyone's clothes. *I would've made a lot more in tips if they let me deliver pizza*, she thought.

*Wait... why am I thinking about pizza?!*, she stopped herself and returned her mind to the matter at hand.

It was like seeing a place in the daytime that had been terrifying at night, and now you realized it was a completely normal, boring place.

Claire remembered when she was little, and scared by the strange, shapeless shadows that filled her room every night. Her mother had told her, this is just what the dark does, but it's still the same room as it was in the daylight. This made Claire feel a little better.

Then Dad told her about how when *he* was a little boy, every night he saw a row of mysterious hooded figures standing in the closet, watching, waiting, their faces hidden in their hoods. And then every morning they turned out to be only a bunch of short sleeve shirts hanging in the closet. Their hoods were the sleeves. *This* had not made Claire feel better at all.

*I need to tell Myst about that one,* Claire said to herself.

"You know, how in old ghost story illustrations, lady-ghosts are always these wispy, willowy things, floating around weightless, haunting people with their hotness... you know what I mean!"

"I guess? I've never really noticed though."

"And it's like, when I was a kid, we had all these old ghost stories books around, I figured if you happened to die tragically when you're young, pretty, thin, and pale, then you hit the jackpot. Luring unsuspecting men out of the house at night to drown in some bog, just to get a glimpse of you."

"Myst, I've never thought about this even once in my life. And what kind of a jackpot is that?"

"It has its drawbacks, of course. You're probably pretty cold. You only get to wear these flowy, sinewy, see-through gowns, or else a sheet. But not like a normal ghost sheet with holes for eyes, I mean one that you just have to wrap around you and cling to it like it's the closest thing to a material possession you're still able to have. Because it is. And who knows what happens if you let go of it while you're flying around and lose it. They might not even give you another one. And you're always barefoot..."

Claire puzzled for a moment, then asked, "Barefoot? Do ghosts even have feet? The lower part of their body just sorta trails off. Or their whole body is just a blob of marshmallow fluff..."

Myst, annoyed, "Claire you're being led astray by later stuff like *Ghostbusters*, or *Luigi's Mansion*! All written after people quit believing in ghosts. The Victorians believed, and their ghost girls were never Pillsbury dough-balls, or half-human things with tails instead of legs, they were always waifish, fairy-like, dressed in stuff so fine it floated on the breeze just like the rest of you..."

"Go to bed, Myst," said Claire.

Chapter 8: Complicated

Liz pulled her car up to the gatehouse and stopped before the closed gate. This tiny building was no bigger than a phone booth, she noticed. Liz had never seen a real phone booth, of course, but she'd seen a lot of old movies. Most people had seen them too, probably, so everybody still knew what a phone booth looked like. Even people that didn't watch old movies knew that Superman changed clothes in a phone booth. And it was certainly a safer bet to say it looked like a phone booth than to say what it actually looked even more like, which was the TARDIS. Because then she'd have to explain what *that* was. Not that that mattered. None of this mattered. She wasn't here to describe the gatehouse for posterity, she was here to try to get Claire out of the mental hospital. *Why is my brain like this*, she thought.
