Does flowering kale actually Flower? Yes, but not until the spring. In the meantime, it provides a great accent of color in the winter garden. The leaves are edible, which means deer and rabbits might nibble on them as well.

Growing your own corn lets you enjoy sweeter, fresher harvests while reconnecting with nature and the satisfaction of producing your own food :-)

Grew three different beans this year -- hidatsa reds, hidatsa shields and cherokee black beans. Still drying on the vine but it's hard to be patient.

The growing zone number gives you how cold it can get in winter. This is important for your perennial trees, shrubs, and flowers. You also need to know how hot does it get in the summer, what is the level of humidity as well as the rainfall.

Think fast growing crops that can tolerate a frost: spinach, lettuce, arugula, cilantro, baby bok choy, scallions… and you can have more vegetables growing for you this fall!

As the summer progresses, there are more bugs. It becomes even more important to have a diversity of crops to reduce the pest pressure as much as possible. Yes, I do feel as if I am constantly at war with the insect population.

A bowl of tomatoes from my niece’s greenhouse! A pile of purple potatoes on the porch. Small red potatoes lay in a pile of dirt on a tarp in the sun!☀️

While a lot of produce CAN be imported, it does NOT have to be imported. There is plenty of local produce available, especially this time of year. Take those extra steps to support local growers, so that you continue to have farms available to you in your area.

A Melon of some kind has volunteered in my compost. The same compost that plants do *not* seem to grow well from when it’s finished and spread around a garden bed. 😏

A little green melon sits on a pile of composting sawdust, shaded by wide green melon leaves and a few grass seed heads. A vine attaches to the melon and winds away again to climb up the compost bin or something.
