2026 has been a challenging year! Extreme weather events all year have pushed us to keep on growing. Extreme cold, extreme drought, extreme heat… it’s been one of the harder years that we have experienced. And yet, we keep on growing. Resilience is key.

Does flowering kale actually Flower? Yes, but not until the spring. In the meantime, it provides a great accent of color in the winter garden. The leaves are edible, which means deer and rabbits might nibble on them as well.

What is still growing? Even though the temperatures have dropped noticeably, many plants love this weather: cabbage, broccoli, arugula, cilantro, lettuce, bok choy, cauliflower, escarole, and many more.

One of the great things about heirloom pumpkin seeds is you can save the seeds and they grow the same as the pumpkin they came from. In this way, seeds travel all over the world to find new homes on new continents.

When is fig season here in Delaware? We started with a few in late June and now these trees are finally producing in early October. This is all dependent on their winter protection and the winter weather. Keeps us guessing every time.

How to keep squirrels from eating your pumpkins?
1. Use a hot pepper spray. Some squirrels seem to like spicy food, so this does not work on them.
2. Use a barrier, such as a row cover or sheet. Cover each night, weigh the ends down, so it doesn’t blow away.

Who wants to weed? Never any volunteers. Weeding has to be the least favorite activity for anyone in the garden or on the farm. However, maintaining a healthy growing area is essential for healthy plants.

You need to be careful even with organic sprays. Just because something is natural does not mean there are no consequences. Peppermint oil sounds benign, but it can have serious effects.
