Besides a Sea Walnut (Mnemiopsis leidyi), here's a Common Northern Comb Jelly (Bolinopsis infundibulum). Amazing these otherworldly creatures inhabit the little ol' English coast. Unlike other #Devon #ctenophores we saw the Northern Comb Jelly (Beroe cucumis) lacks tentacles, instead engulfing other ctenophores with huge mouth. These ancient marine #invertebrates are largest animals to swim with cilia.

Our run of luck on #CombJellies #Ctenophores in #Devon began on 25 June at Mill Bay #Salcombe with wondrous Northern Comb Jelly (Beroe cucumis). The magical rainbow disco ball effect is structural iridescence caused by the beating of cilia, forming the 8 "comb" rows down its body, to swim it along.🧵
