In 1962 David Raup used an IBM 7090 and a plotter to turn four numbers into snails. Turn one dial, translation, and a flat ramshorn coil becomes a planospiral snail becomes a tower shell. 🧪🐌 #MolluscMonday #SciArt

Three green-on-black wireframe shells made from Raup's coiling model. Left: a flat, planispiral coil. Middle: a typical snail with a short spire. Right: a tall, many-whorled tower shell. Only the translation parameter T differs between them.

For this #molluscmonday we got a large one, the Tritonia hombergii. This sea slug grows to about 20 cm, which is gigantic compared to most other species in Sweden.

A photo of a Tritonia hombergii sea slug. The sea slug is grey in colour with orange edges. The sea slug is crawling on a rocky wall with pink encrusting coralline algae.

#MolluscMonday: spotted this clam shell decoration on a visit yesterday to Newhailes, cared for by the National Trust for Scotland. Thought at first that they were moulded plaster but they’re real, gilded, clam shells from 1816 or earlier.

Fireplace in a historic house with a mirror and portrait above and lines of gilded clam shells. Close up of real clam shells gilded as room decoration.

#MolluscMonday Scratched by the feet of countless visitors unaware of its existence, a Carboniferous gastropod in a memorial stone in the cloisters of Westminster Abbey.

Here's a new contribution to #MolluscMonday :)

More geekery tonight. Trying to make sure my code worked as intended and generating Raup's Figure 2 from his 1962 paper "Computer as Aid in Describing Form in Gastropod Shells" #marinelife #SciArt #paleobiology #MolluscMonday #paleontology

Finally got around to making Raup's mollusk shell model work in R. Also spent too much time trying to give a retro look. #marinelife #molluscmonday

*Megathura* for #MolluskMonday! 🌊🦑 #MarineLife #MolluscMonday

The giant keyhole limpet’s black mantle protrudes from beneath its white shell. It expels wastes through the “keyhole” pore at the apex of its shell.

#molluscmonday !
I just received some gorgeous Vietnamese Amphidromus. The larger specimen (A. heinrichhuberi) measures 60 mm. The pair of smaller ones (A. jomi) is named after a friend.

Landsnails lay on a white surface. The larger snail is deep green with lighter markings. The pair of smaller ones are yellow with olive green bars and dark red lips.

Terrific example of #scicomm for my #ENVSCOMM26 students to watch & learn, about the Billion Oyster Project in NYC, which aims to replenish oyster reef there for all of the good reason. Also thematically apt for #MolluscMonday! 🧪🦪

Another week and another #molluscmonday. This time we got the Facelina bostonensis nudibranch, which i saw on a scuba dive on a cold november day. It is also known as "Dragon nudibranch" in Swedish. 🤿🦑

#MolluscMonday Section of a fossil gastropod shell in a Bordeaux street paving stone. I believe this to be an acteonellid of Cretaceous age but would welcome feedback.

In this reach of the River Little Ouse amazing drifts of #mollusc shells including Great & Keeled Ram's-Horns (Planorbarius corneus, P. carinatus), Great Pond Snail (Lymnaea stagnalis), Horny Orb-Mussel (Sphaerium corneum) & Jenkin's Spire-Snail (Potamopyrgus antipodarum). #MolluscMonday #invert

I like this pic of a Common Bithynia (Bithynia tentaculata) at the end of the rainbow. With more River Nerites (Theodoxus fluviatilis) & their eggs, Acute Bladder Snail (Physella acuta), plus Common River-Snail (Viviparus viviparus) & chomping Great Ram's-Horn (Planorbarius corneus). #MolluscMonday

#MolluscMonday Steinkerns of rudist bivalves are the most peculiar and perplexing fossils to be found in the Late Cretaceous rocks of SW France. The owners of the holiday home where this example was found assembled a collection of rudist steinkerns believing them to be dinosaur teeth.

decent pic of the carnivorous clam seen by #Okeanos last week at about 5834 m. Hugh MacIntosh Identifies it as "probably Policordia, in the family Lyonsiellidae. They have a big inhalant siphon with a hood that they evert, then suck back in during prey capture." #molluscmonday

tentacled white open siphon adjacent to rockshell closed but still partially ajar with tentacles
