The first vampire film was The Vampire (1913), which was based on an 1897 poem by Rudyard Kipling. In the film, a man in a toxic relationship watches a stage show involving a vampire seductress, and realizes it mirrors his own experience. #WyrdWednesday

Varney the Vampire was a penny dreadful that ran from 1845 to 1847. The character Sir Francis Varney introduced many key tropes of vampire lore, such as fangs, puncture wounds in victims' necks, hypnotic powers, and superhuman strength. He also inspired the Marvel character Varnae. #WyrdWednesday

JULES VERNE'S TOMB (1907)
The monument, created by sculptor Albert Roze, shows the writer as a #revenant or returner from beyond the grave, reaching towards the sky. Its face was modelled on his death mask. Image: Amiens, France. #WyrdWednesday

1732 THE YEAR OF THE VAMPIRE
12 books and four dissertations were written on the vampire in this year. Flückinger's Visum er Repertum (Seen or Discovered) documented a vampire outbreak in Serbia; a full scale vampire panic erupted & the term 'vampire' entered the English language #WyrdWednesday

Wyrdlings!

"The boundaries which divide Life from Death are at best shadowy and vague”, Poe famously wrote and for the anniversary of his own death, we give you:

“Sometimes they come back – Return from the Great Beyond”

as this week’s #WyrdWednesday topic.

Come, tell tales of the living dead! 💀

Apologies to #WyrdWednesday Looking back at yesterday’s post I see I have inserted “the” into the title. Odd thing to do with a film I have seen several times…. memory…sigh

They dance to rhythmic drum music, building a pyramid, and at the end they drink mead from their wooden mugs, singing a ritual song.

Thanks to you Wyrdlings, we have reposted enough content to make for an absolutely legendary #WyrdWednesday! We hope you loved taking a trip back in time as much as we did.

We will announce a new topic early next week. Until then, take care, and watch out for dinos 🦖

Does anyone remember the name of the dinosaur featured in the cartoon series Rugrats?

This is Reptar, hear him roar as he wrecks carnage.

The modern image of Mokele-mbembe as a long-necked dinosaur owes a great deal to Western cryptozoology. Local traditions are more complicated than the familiar "living brontosaurus" image suggests. Sometimes the monster changes shape when outsiders start telling the story. #WyrdWednesday

Highlighting the Age of Reptiles in style: Sydenham Dinosaur Court was opened in 1854 with a gala dinner served inside of an iguanodon.

At least the mould of one of those exhibited in the park. They are still there.

In the fantasy Western film The Valley of Gwangi (1969), a group of cowboys working for a struggling Wild West rodeo capture a live dinosaur, an allosaurus, to put on display for profit. Unsurprisingly, the dinosaur doesn't take well to captivity. #WyrdWednesday

In the film The Mole People (1956), archaeologists discover an ancient race of Sumerian albino folk living deep underground. They keep mutant mole men as slaves to harvest mushrooms and occasionally sacrifice young women to the goddess Ishtar. #WyrdWednesday
