Victor, a young man with some anxiety issues, saw a dead body today. It’s taking him a minute to get to sleep.

But it’s all fine. Totally fine. Nothing weird is going to wake him up in the middle of the night…

That night, he lay in bed, trying not to think about what had happened, but not having yet learned that the more you tried not to think about something, the more it possessed your mind. It wasn’t until after his mother turned off the light in the hall that he thought to ask her to leave it on, but, at fourteen, knew he was too old to be afraid of the dark.
When he heard her close her bedroom door, he switched on the light from his phone on the bedside, but the bright and singular light distorted everything in his room. Once comforting toys cast eerie long shadows on the wall, growing into monsters that loomed over him. He flicked it off again. The thought of lighting a candle briefly crossed his mind, but he immediately dismissed it as the worst idea he’d had all day. He let his eyes adjust, nervous to close them. Slowly, sleep crept upon him, mercifully overtaking his anxiety.

Six towers lined the road, slits for archers keeping baleful watch over any approach. Ragheiyont took a cautious step forward. No arrows flew down from above. All remained eerily still. He stepped lightly, but he need not have bothered. The city felt as dead as dry bone.

I have it in my android WIP.
Andrew stays alone on the spaceship whilst the passengers and crew go to hyper sleep, including the captain.

He looked down at him, at peace, sleeping with an arm around Atlas, and his hand on his chest. Breathing. The biometrics perfect, deep sleep, slowing metabolism and time. That soft weight on his chest as his eyes grazed his face, his body, his hand… Somehow, Andrew was missing him when he hadn’t been particularly nice… somehow, it was hard to leave the pod bay, close the door. His steps echoing in that eerie silence on those semi dark corridors. The stars now, more visible than ever, blurred as the ship was speeding towards its next destination.

Nikhil shook his head, still stuck partly in disbelief. ‘Whatever, it is quite eerie. Imagine getting stranded in the past because you didn’t hold your partner’s hand while time-travelling to the present. Horrendous!’

The empty streets of Corozol felt haunted and eerie. Unlike the busy daily lives of the people in every other major city, this city was desolate and vacant. There were people around if one was paying attention. Most were hidden and carefully watched the group as they walked unimpeded through the streets. Any door or window that may have been open as they approached was quickly slammed shut as they passed by.

#SundaySnips Eerie!

from A Mirror with an Edge, The Tipping World vol 4

Wind howled through the narrow gorge as if it harbored lost souls. Sparud shivered, wrapping his arms around himself while he wished the spooky idea hadn’t occurred to him. It was that awful thing in the cave behind him, reeking of despair, cruelty its provenance. He felt as if he could taste its contamination even through the walls of the lead box housing it.
He kept watch in the mouth of this cave, half-hidden behind a rock. They had found the place in the foothills of the Sogran Mountains around dawn. Liyra slept; their flight had been an ordeal for her. The blade that cut her had gone so deep through the thickest muscle in her thigh that it had nicked the bone, and his first attempt at stitches must have felt like being injured all over again, except more slowly.
There was no one to spell him while he rested: he had no choice but to stay awake. The shadows seemed to writhe as if that ghostly wind were blowing them. He blinked his pumice-grainy eyes, but it didn’t clear his vision. It would have been an eerie night had they been indoors, and after what they witnessed yesterday, he wasn’t sure he would ever get past the point where he felt like he was fighting to hold a moan inside.

#SundaySnips - Eerie

Here's an eerie moment from The Bird and the Blade!

Then, in a moment that caused chills to spread across Callum’s entire body in a violent wave, everything went wrong. The birdsong died. The hair on the back of Callum’s neck and his arms lifted. Silently, he nocked an arrow and whistled, low and steady.
Judyth turned around, eyes wide. She motioned Wilder to keep talking. Wilder stumbled on a word as she drew two daggers and nodded to Callum. Wilder’s hands lifted to rest on the pommels of his short swords.
Judyth mouthed, What’s wrong?
Callum looked up, then back to her. He gestured to his ear. Where are the birds? he mouthed back.

Fire in the Sky, so 'ware spoilers at the link, and Mortimer and Archer are sneaking into a Sinnlenst safehouse

( saranadosfiction.com/2025/09/13/f... )

“I don’t need you to tell me how to run an infiltration.”

“Then try to-” the older man began, before cutting himself off with a visible effort. “My apologies. This isn’t the damn time, and you’re even more worried for him than I am.”

No need to ask which ‘him’ he meant. *And the two of them have been friends for longer than I’ve been alive.* Didn’t make him feel all that much bloody better about the situation, but remembering that he wasn’t the only one worrying for his father’s health was… helpful, in a strange kind of way.

Past the front door, the hallway was surprisingly well-lit and even more surprisingly quiet, the gaslamps flickering in the eerie silence. The guards had hung their outdoor coats up on the wall, and Mortimer was surprised despite himself to see Archer take a moment to rifle expertly through their pockets, fingers flicking through scraps of paper and twists of packaging twine with practised ease.

“I was a spy, if you recall,” he said quietly, in answer to Mortimer’s unasked question. “Some habits die harder than others, and this one might well net us something we can work with.”

It was a reasonable enough answer, even if he still chafed at the delay – who knew what could be happening while the two of them were waiting out here? – but even the least competent of the Sinnlenst knew better than to leave anything compromising in a garment that wasn’t currently on them.

*Or, at least, they should do. The gods know I yelled at enough of Tyburn’s lot about it back when I was trying to prove my loyalty, and they seemed to have taken it onboard.*

*Could wish they hadn’t, now, though I doubt any of* this *lot are from that faction.*

#SundaySnips Oct 4: The only use of the word itself in the manuscript is, as it happens, not a particularly eerie moment, so you're getting this instead.

In the center of the grove was a large, smooth stone. Oval in shape, it was about about as long as Rhiann was tall, its color a deep lapis blue. The whole surface bore carvings: patterns of lines and whorls, hundreds of them, tangled up in each other. Runework, but certainly not Toviran, and even more alien than those in the cavern beneath Aylesburh. The shapes were a briar thicket, thorny and tangled. They pierced each other from one shape to the next and almost seemed to move, slipping and slithering like living things. Her rune-scars itched and her instincts were screaming—the same way they had when she set eyes on Tashain of Alencia.
Rhiann didn’t realize that the sight of the odd stone had caused her to physically recoil until Lycus bumped into the back of her. She flinched and was about to snap at him, but he was so intently focused on the stone that she held her tongue.
“Those—” Lycus said, his tone sepulchral. “I recognize those runes.”

#SundaySnips - Not sure if this is the only time I used eerie, but it's the only time I remember using it.

A couple of hours ago, Carver joined Tank, Wolf, and others to rescue his drugged ex from a scary situation. They've just finished cataloguing his injuries and getting their story straight.

If there was any comeback from this, the three of us would take the rap. I would take anything coming to me, and as much as I could on behalf of Tank and Wolf, because Ash was safe and alive instead of decomposing among those eerie trees.

‘I’m going to get him to drink some water.’

‘Little bits at a time. Not too much. He’ll throw it up.’ Wolf made a good point.

‘Got it.’

Over the next hour, I got an entire glass of water into him, a couple of sips at a time. He tried to smile every time I told him he was a good boy, and he was gradually getting more coherent. Still confused, but more with it.

He was as settled as he was getting for the state he was in. He wouldn’t want me there once he was fully back in the room mentally, and he would mostly sleep until then. The only place I wanted to be was where I could see him. But it was time to tear myself away before he remembered he didn’t talk to me anymore.

When Tank checked in to see how we were doing, I took that as my cue.

‘I’m going to pee, then I think I should head home.’

‘Carver! Carver, don’t leave me.’

I’d have had to be totally heartless to ignore that level of distress.

‘Or maybe not. Looks like I’m staying. Ash, I still have to pee. I’ll be two minutes.’

‘Don’t leave me.’

‘I’m coming straight back.’

‘Promise.’

‘I promise.’

‘Promise nicer.’

The voice of my sweet demanding brat. I crouched down beside him and waited for him to attempt to focus on me. It still looked like he was trying to figure out which one to look at.

‘Sweetheart, I promise I’ll come straight back. I’m going to pee and get us both some more water and I’ll be right back.’

‘Kay.’

The urge to kiss him on the forehead and tell him how much I loved him, was like a knife in my gut. I used the bathroom time to pull myself together and promise my brain I would process later.

#SundaySnips tam just slightly misinterpreting the situation as usual (repost due to typo teehee)

"Tam’s perfume is great,” Isabella said, eyes pinned to the screen. “He’s stingy about it, though.”
“It’s cologne,” I said through gritted teeth. “Why don’t you just buy your own, miss trust fund? Not like you can’t afford it.”
She gave me the finger, still talking to Noah. “He smells like a sexy campfire. Seriously.”
Noah leaned in close to breathe her in, and—swear to fucking god—made eye contact with me when he did it. Their shoulders pressed together. His lips parted.
“Hm. Yeah,” he said, eerie-ass shark eyes ghosting away. “Hickory. Very sexy.”
The words BACK OFF!! shrieked through my head. He was doing it on purpose. Ohhhhh the fucker was doing it on purpose. I was about to grind the fucking enamel off my teeth. Isabella didn’t notice, of course, because she was too busy shooting ghouls and staring at Leon Kennedy’s ass.

#SundaySnips - EERIE

I have one (1) use of this word in my WIPs. I'm surprised I had any.

Stella's POV. I guess this could be considered kind of a spoiler, since it's near the end of the book, but honestly, all snippets are kind of spoilers. Dead dove, do not eat.

A text-heavy graphic with a yellow background featuring the title UNBEARABLE HUXLEY RONAN. There are illustrations of two characters, a large man in a suit and a petite woman in a skirt, on each side of the text box. The text includes the follow snippet:

“Well…” I stare down at my bathroom counter, unsure whether to be pleased or terrified. Either way, an eerie calm has settled over me, now that I have an answer for why I’ve been feeling so tired and out of sorts the past couple of weeks. A reason besides my own heartbreak.
Shay is rocking violently in my arms, trying to reach for the fun new toy I’ve left on the counter, sorely out of range of his grabby little hands.
“Shay, honey, settle down. That’s not for you.” I try to distract him with some bouncing, but he starts wailing because Mommy is evil and won’t let him have the Thing. He kicks out one of his legs when I turn to leave the bathroom, sending the object in question flying off the counter and skidding across the hall, almost all the way to my bedroom. “You sure taught it a lesson, huh?”

Unsurprisingly, Wren finds herself in a bit of a predicament.

From book 2 of my romantic fantasy series about a priest of the dead and a thief with a heart of gold.

#SundaySnips #Wrencer #WritingPrompts #Writesky

“That could have gone better,” Wren mumbled to herself. She wiggled her wrists, testing the leather cuffs that held her strapped against a broad length of wood. It was tipped over at an angle and left her not exactly standing but not lying down either. A strap across her neck kept her from bending at the waist to worry at the buckles with her teeth. It was probably meant to go across her chest, but it seemed Wren was shorter than the Magnus’s usual victims.

The look on Var Krugan’s face when I stabbed his necromancer wife in the throat with her own steak knife, though… Wren smiled a little, savoring the memory. All the color had drained out of him, his eyes bulging in the sockets. A little vein had even throbbed in his temple.

Worth it.

For a moment, Wren had been convinced the Magnus was going to kill her outright, grand plans be damned. He’d teetered briefly on the edge of violence and then he’d wrestled that cold mask back into place. Annika had pulled the knife out of her neck and stabbed it dramatically into the table. Eerie how little blood there was. I got her right in the artery, should’ve been a great big fountain of it.

Going to cheat and post 2 with 'unnerving'. One is a short one that fits the vibe.

The other is much longer & different vibe, but I love this moment! It's unrevised rough draft from further in the story, but...🥰

Both are from Felcrown, the story of the megadungeon that became a city.

Screenshot of a work-in-progress manuscript with the word 'unnerving' highlighted.

Luzz was thankful he had encountered very few guard patrols, but the silence of the domains he passed through was unnerving. More than once he caught nervous eyes peering out at him from behind shuttered windows.Screenshot of a work-in-progress manuscript with the word 'unnerving' highlighted.

“Dee, you should look up,” Pyntal said.
“No, I’m fine, Pin. I just wanted you to enjoy this.” She remained on her hands and knees, facing the ground. “Once when I was little, I took a school trip to the surface. I looked up then and not only was it so bright that it hurt my eyes, but there was no ceiling in sight. Just endless nothing above me. I felt like I was going to fall into the sky!”
Pyntal giggled. With one hand, she laced her fingers through Digs’s and with the other hugged her lover’s arm. “First off, it’s night time, so obviously it’s not as bright. Secondly, I’ll hold onto you and won’t let go, I promise. Trust me.”
Digs looked at Pyntal’s sweet smile. In battle, she never hesitated to trust her life to this wonderful woman she loved. She could trust her with this.
She nervously turned, struggling to hold her eyes open. She knew the science involved and how ridiculous her reaction was, but the experience at such a young age had been deeply unnerving. Digs felt her heart race and she gripped Pyntal’s hand far harder than she intended.
Looking up over her shoulder, she saw the dark silhouettes of trees and then—her breath caught, she fell over onto her back, mouth wide in astonishment. It was unlike anything Digs had ever seen in her life, whether awake or dreaming.
Pyntal hugged her arm tighter and snuggled onto Digs’s chest. “Do you like them? Those are stars. You can even see tip of the planet’s rings peaking out over those trees.”

‘Great.’ Gerald moved his hand away. ‘But don’t go too slow.’
‘Why?’ Rourke chipped in. He knew where this was going.
‘The Maryland Goatman,’ Gerald said quietly, almost whispering. ‘Don’t stop on the bridge. That’s where he lives.’
‘We’re missile-proof; I think we’ll be okay.’ Wiltshire joined in.
Oh.’ Ted laughed uncertainly. ‘Right.’
The Cry Baby Bridge,’ added Rourke. ‘You know that legend, right?’

The #SundaySnips Word of the Week is 'eerie' - ironically, I've only used this word 3 times in my paranormal thriller lmao. Katie begins to realize that perhaps mischaracterization is a symptom of her best friend's minorly delusional worldview. Innocuous as it may seem, it is a clue.

The Sunday Snips word of the week is 'eerie' - the following is an excerpt from my novel WIP 'The Canary' featuring the word of the week - However, the longer I read the more my face fell. It was true that we shared a deep bond over our adoration of tragic lovers. The story she titled 'in aeternum implicatus' was a nod to her passion for Latin and Roman history but it was something deeper, too. The tale was eerie and familiar, a deeply emotional extension to the myth of Romulus and Remus. I saw that we'd studied the same mythos, but she'd seen a very different ending.

In Bekah's story, Romulus was a deeply flawed young man who had an unhealthy and entangled vision of his future and his brother's true motives. He saw his wolf mother's kindness as selective and his river father's mercy as neglect. The anguish he felt taking Remus's life was the cost of his boundless lust for power. Still, this version of Romulus could not bear his shame. The reality of his crimes was a sobering curse. Actualization was in his very grasp, his destiny sealed, but the one person he wanted to celebrate with the most lied dead in his hands, by his hands.

‘Oh. So… she’s got a job now.’
‘Mr. Requiem is very much about hard work and being strict. I was actually surprised he suggested she find a job considering…’ Mrs. Requiem paused, closed her eyes, and sighed. ‘…other requests he’s made of them. He’s very protective of his children.’
‘Somehow I got that feeling,’ I said with a laugh.
Mrs. Requiem wasn’t laughing. Her eyes met mine, and every nerve in my body screamed for me to flee. Fear flooded my nervous system, yet I was paralyzed. She looked no different from before, she was even still smiling! But something changed. Something I couldn’t see with my eyes but could feel on a primal level. Something left over in my brain from the primeval days of sharpened sticks and stones howled that, despite her human appearance, Mrs. Requiem was a being far more dangerous than anything I’d ever encountered.
