She counted the bells on the flower, gave each a name, hoping it would not make the petals fall. The flower did shiver. There was too much hate & pain. The earth drew it down until the flower could sing it to the wind. The wind blew until that song became too thin to live.

She
counted
the
bells
at
the
unopened
door
grounded
in
the
difference
between
empathy
as
enigma
and
beating
hearts
standing
with
her;
are
we
all
mere
lonely
butterflies
without
hope?

Kids collect the weirdest stuff.

she counted the bells
as they tinkled around
her little white handbasket
with daisies and dandelions
desiccating half-eaten apple
and several teeth

she skipped down the path
searching searching searching
for items to add to her collection

two leg bones from small roadkill
pink worm, six inches long, still alive
dead Monarch butterfly
one of the neighbor's prize roses
babydoll's head with one eye missing
all proudly going in her handbasket to hell

She counted the bells
She does it every day
Then she returns to her chores
Bells don't mean anything to her
or the counting
Yesterday she lost her best friend
Today was another day
She gathered herself
She heard them once more
And once more
She counted the bells

She counted the bells
ringing in her ears

Drowning out the voices
whispering sweet nothings

Tension's dam breaks

Overwhelming the senses

Flooding her emotional reservoir
with conflicting feelings
impossible to reconcile
within the tempest

she wandered the streets
looking disheveled
muttered quietly
made no eye contact
people stepped aside
no one understood
she counted the bells
the world was alright

She counted the bells and skipped along the sidewalk doing her best to match each chime. Watching each breath escape her lips, she gazed up at the heartbroken clouds and anticipated small tears escaping their graying fringe. Daylight was surprised by the swiftness of the night.

She counted the bells, tolling gloomily in the coal-stained fog clinging to the cobblestones. The sour mist reeked of roasting mutton, cheap pipe tobacco, & the sulphur of coal fires. She counted the bells over the clatter of iron-rimmed wheels & the cries of street urchins.

She counted the bells
as they burst the hush
delighting sounds; a spell on air
She counted the bells
stories they tell
this magic rush
She counted the bells
as they burst the hush

She counted the bells; listening as the slow, sonorous tolling echoed around the narrow valley.
A nice tradition, she supposed, although she did wish it didn’t affect her the way that it was.
The desire to count each strike wasn’t that unusual,

She counted the bells ön Sunday morning -

one for luck,
two for courage,
three for joy
four for love,
five for a kiss,
six for a wish,
seven for health,
eight for wealth,
nine for a dream,
ten for sleeping in late.

She counted the bells. They were difficult to hear over the sounds of battle. At midnight, the carriage still turned into a pumpkin. Each night, she ripped off a piece and prepared the only hot meal anyone could get inside the besieged castle’s walls.

The fields are black

As dark as the souls
of the spineless sychophants
who look the other way
and rationalize the hypocrisies
of the monster who weaponizes
hatred and prejudice
on a scale never before seen

She counted the bells as she stood on the balcony above the church square. Forty seven... Forty eight... It was a compulsion. In her mind, she hung onto each slow toll as it shimmered across the red tiled rooftops of the village. Fifty one... Fifty two...

Fra Angelo would be pulling his surplice over his head in the sacristy ready for the funeral, kissing the embroidered cross at the centre of his stole before placing it around his neck, dusting then donning his biretta.
Uncle Giovanni was dead. Maria felt empty.
The image of the gunman casually walking away from the café was etched in her mind's eye. Peccatito they called him - Little Sin - and yet he was the most deadly of all.
She draped her mantilla across her hair and turned towards the stairs. She would taste his blood, she vowed.
     And it would be sweet.
