…which he expressed mostly by commissioning some really cool building projects, like his subterranean aqueduct, a new channel for the mighty Eridanos River, and of course the precinct and temple of Olympian Zeus!

Stairway to heaven. For #FrescoFriday we examine a rare #fresco from #Domitian's palace on the #Palatine. This yellow and purple staircase suggests staff used it to go from private imperial rooms to the magnificent state halls upstairs. Look for the ghostly figures. #AncientBluesky 🏺

FRESCO FRAGMENT FROM THE PALACE OF DOMITIAN, 85-90 CE. PALATINE HILL

A detail of an ancient Roman wall featuring painted fresco decoration. The plaster is painted yellow, divided into rectangular panels by dark purple bands. In the central yellow panel, a delicate double garland hangs across the space, and two ghostly but beautiful female figures stand in the lower register. At the bottom left, the plaster is broken diagonally, revealing the rough wall and a fragment of cipollino marble baseboard. This is one of the few remaining traces of fresco work from Domitian's palace. It originally decorated a stairway ascending from the peltae courtyard to the now-lost upper ground floor, later removed to create a corridor. While the architect Rabirius favoured lavish opus sectile for imperial rooms, this simpler decoration suggests this specific route was used by staff to travel from the private rooms of the imperial family up to the magnificent state halls above.

Have we found beds that our ancestors slept on 200,000 years ago? 😮 🛌

The incredible preservation at Border Cave in South Africa has given us a unique insight into early human lives!

What would YOUR bed say about you? 👀

An ancient #Roman theater is always the perfect backdrop for a selfie. Bonus points for the Moorish citadel looming above: the Alcazaba. No, Joe is not *that* much shorter than me - I don’t know what he did here.🏺 #ancientbluesky 1/

Poisoned Victory. This week's #ReliefWednesday is a pedestal from the demolished #ArcusNovus of #Diocletian in #Rome, with a winged #Victory that flew off to #Florence when its owner became Grand Duke after the sudden death of his brother. #AncientBluesky 🏺

RELIEF OF WINGED VICTORY FROM THE ARCUS NOVUS, C. 303 CE. BOBOLI GARDENS, FLORENCE

A carved marble pedestal stands in the Boboli gardens. The primary face features a high relief of a standing winged Victory holding a laurel wreath and a palm frond. A palm tree grows at her feet. On the left panel stands a male figure in a helmet and cloak, one of the Dioscuri. Diocletian built the Arcus Novus to mark twenty years of rule and ten of his tetrarchy. Demolished in 1491, this piece was bought by Cardinal Ferdinando de' Medici for his Villa Medici on the Pincio, where other reliefs from the arch remain embedded in the garden façade. After his brother the Grand Duke of Tuscany and his wife Bianca Cappello mysteriously died of arsenic poisoning, Ferdinando flung his cardinal's hat into a bed of nettles and rushed back to Florence as the new Grand Duke, bringing his collection of antiquities with him. A victory indeed.

A reunion with some old friends in Sicily. During our excursion with students from @unisalzburg.bsky.social, one of our first stops was Monte Iato, where @uniinnsbruck.bsky.social has been excavating. We also visited the local museum, home to these extraordinary finds.🏺 #AncientBlueSky #archaeology
