So many Ruddy Turnstones (Arenaria interpres) around this fall migration. Much more than usual, although still uncommon. Probably because so much habitat on the larger lakes and rivers, a consequence of the extended drought during the summer. #BirdingHungary #waders #shorebirds #FallMigration2026

Most of the small #plovers around right now are Common Ringed Plovers. Little Ringed Plovers (Charadrius dubius) - like this one - are getting scarce. This is the only one I've seen in weeks. #BirdingHungary #shorebirds #waders #BirdsSeenIn2026

Short vid of last weekend's mystery Black-tailed Godwit (Limosa limosa). Bigger and taller than the Bar-tailed Godwit but not the biggest of the 4 godwit species. That distinction belongs to the Marbled Godwit. #BirdingHungary #shorebirds #waders #godwits

Phonescope image of the Polish ringed Black-tailed Godwit from the weekend. The nerve of this bird... running around with no ID. 👮 🚔 😂 Check out that crazy beak. Impossible to preen its neck unless it gets another godwit to do it. 😀 #BirdingHungary #godwits #WaderWednesday #shorebirds #waders

A whole bunch of Spotted Redshanks (Tringa erythropus) went thru in July but since then they have been a bit scarce. This is the first one I've seen in many weeks. #BirdingHungary #BirdsSeenIn2026 #shorebirds #waders #WaderWednesday #sandpipers

I See Something

Here’s a laughing gull (Leucophaeus atricilla) I photographed at Gulfport, Mississippi. ...

1/2

#photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #wildlife #nature #bird #birds #birding #birdwatching #birdphotography #shorebirds #laughinggull

"A laughing gull sweeps across the sky in mid‑flight, captured from behind and slightly below, giving the viewer the sense of looking up at a bird passing overhead. Its wings stretch outward in a wide, graceful arc, each feather fanned and layered with crisp precision. The tips of the wings are dark, almost black, contrasting sharply with the bright white of the gull’s body.

The bird’s tail feathers flare slightly, forming a neat triangle of white edged in black. Its legs tuck tightly beneath it, small and streamlined, adding to the sense of effortless motion. The background is a smooth, pale gray sky — empty, quiet, and uncluttered — which makes the gull’s form stand out like a clean silhouette carved against soft light.

The image feels serene and airy, as if the gull is gliding through a calm morning sky, wings steady, body balanced, moving with the easy confidence of a bird that knows the wind intimately." - Microsoft Copilot

Polish color-ringed Black-tailed Godwit. Couldn't get details because there was no designation. Odd. Usually you can tell if the flag has been soiled, but this black flag was a consistent uniform black on both sides with no numbers, not even partial. #BirdingHungary #shorebirds #godwits #waders

Interesting scientific study about waders breeding in the High Arctic.
A recent study found that waders breeding in the Arctic tundra are much less likely to return to the same breeding sites than birds living in other habitats

Seriously, who told you that you can sing? … #CaptionThatBird #BirdOfTheDay #birds #shorebirds #gulls #birdphotography #ECK 🪶

A herring gull, at left with his head high and beak open while facing the camera, starts to “vocalize,” seemingly to the annoyance of its fellow gull standing at right and looking to the left. Both are standing in shallow water on a pebbly beach.

Spotted Sandpiper—do you know that its constant bobbing of hindquarters might be a signal to warn others? I watched one foraging in the shallow waters at Harns Marsh Preserve today, actively searching for invertebrates among all that debris! #SWFLwildlife #shorebirds
