iNaturalist tells me this damselfly is called a Bluet. A fitting name, I suppose.

Nature built the Wolf Spider for one job and it shows

It hunts on foot instead of spinning a web, the mother carries her egg sac attached to her spinnerets, and the spiderlings then ride on her back.

It’s meloe business time, apparently! You go, beetles.

Two blue-green-black segmented iridescent beetles are getting it on amidst the dirt and grass. The smaller one is atop the larger one. They seem to be enjoying themselves.

A spotted orb-weaver (Neoscona sp.) in the center of her orb-web with her head pointed toward the bottom of frame to show us all of her beautiful dorsal patterns. Ironically, not a lot of spots. More stripe and band-like patterns on her legs and abdomen.

A review of 31 studies finds #cave #invertebrate chemical #ecology research is mostly descriptive (82%), biased toward beetles and Europe/Americas, while Africa has none. Functional/molecular approaches remain rare, especially in fully cave-adapted species.
