Caspian Gull at Newton Pool briefly last night whilst conducting Operation Spotted Crake. The local gull roosts are at the Long Nanny (can't be arsed to walk up there !) and offshore on the Emblestones (distant/difficult to view). Caspian Gull remains a patch rarity.

2026 green patch yearlist thread, 8 September; #125. Two Spotted Flycatchers in Exhibition Park; probably the most reliable site on my patch for them.

Once the commonest breeding summer visitor in the area; now a scarce passage migrant.

Two Spotted Flycatchers in Exhibition Park, Newcastle.

First of this once-abundant species I've seen this year, anywhere.

Soggy start to a week off with a wander over to Browndown - much needed and very welcome after a mostly too hot summer! Not much seen yet asides from Sandwich Terns offshore. Hopefully some birdy days to come đŸ€ž #LowCarbonBirding

Shingle beach with lots of MOD signs warning of DANGER and potential for explosives. One sign says not to enter if the red flag is flying - thankfully it wasn't today. Another sign warns of high wildfire risk. In the distance is lots of horse scrub. It is overcast and wet.

A bee-eater is perched on a branch; you can see it from behind and a little of its left side. It is looking to the left. Its back is green in various shades, and its tail is grey. It has a brown head and a yellow chin; its forehead also appears light green. A long, black, slightly curved beak glistens in the sun. Its underside is visible on the left and appears bluish-grey.

Asides from missing an Osprey (d'oh) it's been nice wandering around the seafront and must be a Flying Ant or something kind of day! Also an obliging Clouded Yellow at Elmore Triangle + many vocal Sandwich Terns offshore. #LowCarbonBirding

Mix of grey and white clouds. There are flats and a row of street lights, and some trees, plus one massive house. Above are lots of gulls that appear to be fly catching Looking towards Fawley oil refinery from Lee-on-the Solent. There is a slope with gorse and vegetated shingle below. Some breakwaters are visible with tall markers. In the distance the tall funnels from the refinery are visible on the left, and Hill Head and Brownwich / Chilling farmland on the right, with Southampton Water just visible and a cruise ship in it if you squint! It is overcast Orangey-yellow butterfly with a white circle. It is partially obscured by a small branch and sat on a green leaf
