Dào Dé Jīng, Part 2 on Dé, Ch. 44
c. 350 BCE

Early today. Daoism is the breakfast of champions. 🥣😋

Self-control was a prized inner power in Hellenism.
So here in ch. 44 - an ode to moderation,
linking it to longer life.

1. Your name and your body, which is dearer?
Your body and material goods, which is more abundant?
Gain and loss, which is illness?

2. Therefore in excessive love one necessarily goes to great expenses,
In hoarding much one necessarily loses heavily.

3. Knowing contentment one does not suffer disgrace,
Knowing when to stop one does not become exhausted.
This way one may last long.

Dào Dé Jīng Pt 2: Dé, Ch. 43
c 350 BCE

Chs 43 & 78 extol the virtues of gentleness & yielding
which are yet the most powerful weapons in the world, weapons that conquer without injuring either
themselves or their enemies.

1. The softest in the world,
gallops in the hardest in the world.
That which is not penetrates that which has no crevice.

2. I thereby know the benefit of no-action (wu-wei).
The teaching without words,
the benefit of no-action,
hardly anything in the world can compare with them.

The line in (3),
“The strong and violent do not die a natural death,”
must have been very old, because it was appropriated by both the Confucian & Taoist schools.
Chen (p. 160, abbr.)

Ron Hogan is direct & practical.
He doesn't do cosmology or mysticism.
As is very evident in DDJ ch. 42. 😆

DaoDeJing 42
Derek Hogan

Chapter 42 starts out
with some cosmic mumbo-jumbo
about Tao making one,
one making two,
two making three,
and three making everything else.

I don't know what it means,
and, frankly,
I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Let's get to the practical part:
Men hate to be called
powerless, insignificant, or unworthy,
but that's how
Masters describe themselves.

Because when we lose, we've won.
And when we succeed, we've failed.

Other people will tell you
what I'm telling you now:
"Live by the sword, die by the sword."
That's pretty much what Chapter 42
boils down to.
(See Chapter 46 for more details.)

Ellen Chen (1998, p. 160)

Stanza 3:
While humility is the way to peace and long life,
asserting one’s strength leads to violent early death.

This part on the evils of strength and recalcitrance
serves as a transition to the next chapter
on the benefits of gentleness.

Chen:
The unifying theme in ch. 39
is the concept of the one as the small & humble.
In ch. 42 it is in the last character in (1) hé, meaning harmony.

As all beings come to be through the harmony of yin & yang (1), it is through harmony that all beings are preserved (2)
& long lasting (3).

#DaoDeJing Part 2: Dé, Ch. 42
c. 350 BCE

This chapter's structure resembles that of chapter 39.
Stanza (1), on cosmogony & cosmology,
is followed by ethics in (2) & (3). (Chen, p. 159)

1. Tao gives birth to one,
One gives birth to two,
Two gives birth to three,
Three gives birth to ten thousand beings.
Ten thousand beings carry on their backs and embrace yang in their front,
Blending these two vital breaths (qì) to attain harmony (hé).

2. What people hate most,
Are to be orphaned, widowed and unworthy.
Yet kings and dukes call themselves by these.
Thus things are either decreased so as to be increased,
Or increased so as to be decreased.

3. What others teach,
I also teach:
"The strong and violent do not die a natural death."
This I shall hold as the father of my teaching.

Section 2. A long quotation on the nature of Dào.

Chen divided it by subject:
1: Dào is the subject,
2: dé is the subject,
3: dà, the great or maximum that exceeds ordinary measure, is the subject.
Chen (1998, p. 155, abbr.)

Ron Hogan's ch. 41 is below. I do like his translation.
#Daoism DDJ 41

Text:
Dào Dé Jīng Ch. 41
Ron Hogan

When a wise person hears about Tao,
he gets right with it.
When an ordinary person
hears about Tao,
he tries to get right with it,
but eventually gives up.
When a fool hears about Tao,
he just laughs and laughs.
If he didn't laugh, it wouldn't be Tao.Text:
Dào Dé Jīng Ch. 41

Here's what they find so funny:
The path to enlightenment
seems covered in shadows.
The way forward
feels like taking a step back.
The easiest path seems difficult.
Those with the most virtue
seem debased.
Those who are most pure
seem to be grubby and soiled.
The deepest thoughts appear shallow.
The greatest strength
looks like weakness.
What is most real
strikes us as imaginary.
The largest space has no boundaries.
The greatest talent
seems to produce nothing.
The greatest voice is unhearable.
The greatest beauty is invisible.

Tao is hidden to us
and it has no name.
It is the source and the strength of all things.

Dào Dé Jīng Pt 2: Dé Ch 41
c 350 BCE

More on the theme of Dào as the non-being
that gives rise to & nurtures all beings.
Dào is the coincidence of opposites
eluding the grasp of ordinary consciousness.

1. When a superior person hears Dào,
He diligently practices it.
When a middling person hears Dào,
He hears it, he doesn't hear it.
When the inferior person hears Dào, he roars.
If Dào were not laughed at,
It would not be Dào.

The one endows everything with its specific nature
so that it is what it is.
As among numbers the number one is the smallest
& yet the beginning & foundation of all numbers,
so the one is #Dào, the creative ground,
coming forth as the small to become the world
which is the great.

Text:
Dào Dé Jīng Part 2: Dé
Ch.39, Ellen Chen

3. Therefore the exalted is rooted in the humble,
The high has the low for foundation.
Therefore barons and kings call themselves orphaned,
widowed and unworthy.
Is this not taking the humble for one's root? Is it not?

4. Therefore the most famous has no fame.
Do not tinkle like jade,
Or chime like stones!Text:
Dào Dé Jīng Part 2: Dé
Ch. 39, Derek Hogan

3. Humility gives us power.
Our leaders should think of themselves
as insignificant, powerless,
unworthy of their stature.
Isn't that what humility is all about?

4. Be strong,
but pay no attention to hollow praise.
Don't call attention to yourself.
Don't make a scene.

Ellen Chen (p 150, abbr)

Every being becomes what it is
by returning to the one from which it comes.

Two parts: 1 & 2 on ontology,
3 & 4 on ethics and politics
based on the ontological foundation in 1 & 2.
The one as the ontological foundation of all beings
is in 5 chs (10, 14, 22, 39, 42)

2. Heaven, without that which renders it clear, might crack,
Earth, without that which renders it peaceful, might explode,
Spirits, without that which makes them efficacious, might cease,
Valleys, without that which replenishes them, might become empty,
Ten thousand beings, without that which sustains them in existence,

Barons and kings, without that which exalts them to high positions,
might be toppled.Text:

2. Without Tao,
the heavens would collapse.
Without Tao,

Without Tao,

Without Tao,
the valleys would dry up.
Without Tao,
all life would become extinct.
Without Tao,

From low dé down to rén, yì, & lǐ, we fall to the non-reversive rigidity of conscious human actions. Moral consciousness as a permanent rupture from the world [results] in
actions aimed at changing the shape of the world.

Human action is warfare waged by humans against nature.

People with integrity
don't even think about it.
That's how you can tell
they have integrity.
Other people talk about
how much integrity they have,
when they really don't have much.
If any.

Truly powerful people
don't do anything,
but they get the job done.
Other people are always busy
doing something,
but nothing ever gets done.

Since reading in the foundational texts of #Daoism
I'm thinking differently about my regular #chiro sessions.

I'm finding Daoism copacetic with my brain;
it's rewiring & straightening out my thoughts on life.
Chiro does that for my spine, muscles, & nerves.

Both allow me to live more naturally. 🪷

In general, the Dào part concerns fundamental ontology,
while the Dé part concerns cosmology, which,
in the DDJ includes the social & political orders,
since humans are a part of the natural world.
