The one endows everything with its specific nature
so that it is what it is.
As among numbers the number one is the smallest
& yet the beginning & foundation of all numbers,
so the one is #Dào, the creative ground,
coming forth as the small to become the world
which is the great.

When nature is perfect (high dé), it is unconscious of itself.
As soon as nature becomes conscious
it falls below itself (low dé).
