The owl features ruffled, reddish-brown (rufous) and tan plumage with complex dark streaking and mottling that provides excellent natural camouflage. Its head is turned upward at a slightly quizzical angle, accentuating wide, prominent yellowish-gold eyes and a small, light-colored beak.

🪶 Rob has chosen #Brown as today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme; any bird with brown in its plumage

Alternative is #Blue, any bird with Blue in its plumage

- Ruddy Turnstone foraging on the beach

#birdphotography
#ECK #birds #birdsofbluesky #naturephotography

Two Ruddy Turnstone foraging on the beach. The first bird is in the foreground to the left of the shot and is pecking at a piece of seaweed on the sand. The second is in the background and to the right, both are in side profile; facing right so that their right sides are shown.
The birds are in winter plumage with hints of summer plumage remaining in places on the back. They have short stout, dark coloured bills and and grey-brown heads with flecks of white, the remains of a black collar on the neck can still be seen. The breast and upper parts are also grey-brown, flecks of chestnut brown and white from its summer plumage can be still be seen in places. The flights and tail are black. The undertone a pure white and they have short, orange-red legs.
The nearer bird is more in focus and both are bent down to forage.
The rest of the shot is sandy beach, covered in minor marks and scuffs from bird activity. The near bird is pecking at a small piece of seaweed in front of it and the far bird has its head stuck in a clump of brown seaweed.

I couldn’t choose between @robcrank68.bsky.social ‘s themes today, for #BirdOfTheDay, so here’s one of each, #Brown and #Blue:

A Redwing and a young Jay.

#ECK #birds #BirdPhotography #BirdWatching #BirdsOfBlueSky #Photography @whatbirds.bsky.social @bbappnews.bsky.social @britishbirds.bsky.social

A Redwing stands with its back to the camera and its head turned to the left in profile. It has a brown back and head but with distinctive cream supercilium (eyebrow stripe) and an obvious reddish brown patch visible in the underwing. The edge of its speckled Brest is also just visible on the left by the red patch. It is standing on green grass.A young Jay stands on the edge of a bird table. It is seen in profile, looking to the left of the frame. It has pinkish plumage and a black ‘ moustache’ and also has an obvious panel of distinctive electric-blue feathers on the wing. The background is blurred green bokeh.
