Bird of the Day: White Wagtail (Motacilla alba) #birdoftheday #botd | #whitewagtail #motacillaalba | #birdsoftheworld #birds |
#birdbrainerapp #birdbrainer
πŸ”— birdbrainer.app

A slender bird standing on a flat pale limestone rock, facing right in three-quarter view, with a white face and underparts, grey crown and nape, dark grey back and wings with pale wing-bar edging, a long dark tail with white outer feathers, a fine dark bill, black eye, and pale legs, against a softly blurred rocky sandy background.

Text on card: Widespread across Europe, Asia, and parts of North Africa, inhabiting farmland, roadsides, towns, rivers, and rocky habitats, often near water. A trim bird with contrasting black, white, and grey plumage that constantly pumps its long tail up and down; it is one of the most familiar small birds of open country.

What bird is this? πŸ€” (See alt text for clue and photo credit) 🌍 #whatbird | #birdsoftheworld | #birds πŸ¦‰πŸ§πŸ¦†πŸ¦©πŸ¦…πŸͺΏπŸ¦š

A medium-sized bird (36–42 cm / 14–17 in long) perches upright on a leafy branch against a soft, out-of-focus background. It features chestnut-brown wings, a streaked brown and white chest, a long dark tail, a prominent white stripe above its sharp red eye, and a slightly hooked black beak.

Clue: Look closely above my red eye for a striking white stripe and listen for my low, bubbling call echoing across the thickets, savannas, and wetlands of sub-Saharan Africa and the southwestern Arabian Peninsula!

Fun Fact: Unlike most of its kind, which are notorious nest parasites, this species builds its own messy, dome-shaped nest and raises its own chicksβ€”with the male doing most of the egg incubation and chick feeding!

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

πŸ‘ Good guess! There is a Rufous-vented ground cuckoo from South America, but ours is African and belongs to this genus:

My husband had been feeding the crows where he works, but he missed a few days. This is what he saw today. Out of the 100s of cars on campus, they chose his to dine upon. They brought their own food. I think they’re trying to tell him something. #birds #crows #fowl #wildlife

πŸͺΆ Rob has chosen #Green as today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme; any birds or backgrounds that have green in them

Alternative is #Geese, any Goose/Geese will do

- A Song Thrush singing against a green background

#birdphotography
#ECK #birds #birdsofbluesky #naturephotography #ColorADay #GreenSat

A Song Thrush perched on top of a dead Elder tree in song. The bird is slightly left of centre of the shot, in side profile facing right so that’s its right side is visible.
The birds head is slightly raised and its beak is slightly open. The beak is dark with yellow around the β€˜lips’ and lower bill. Its face is brown with flecks of creamy white and black throughout. The upper body is a warm brown with darker colouring at the ends of the wing and tail. Its chest is creamy white, turning to white around the legs, and heavily marked with dark, arrow-shaped spots. The legs are a pale, pinkish colour.
The branch it is on comes up from the bottom, slightly left of centre. It branches out into five stubby branches at the top. It is dead and bare of bark with a clump of moss on one branch. The background is a uniform out of focus green.
