What bird is this? 🤔 (See alt text for clue and photo credit) 🌏 #whatbird | #birdsoftheworld | #birds 🦉🐧🦆🦩🦅🪿🦚

A side-profile photo of a relatively large and plump bird (36–43 cm / 14–17 in long) standing on a forest floor amidst ground litter and sparse green grass blades. The bird features a slate-grey back and wings, a whitish face with a pink eye-ring, dark red-pink legs, and a distinctive white "V" pattern bordered by dark grey on its chest, with black crescent spots along its lower belly.

Clue: This ground-dwelling eastern Australian native is famous for the bold, white "V" across its chest and its loud, repetitive "whoop-whoop" call that echoes through the forest!

Fun Fact: Creatures of Habit! These birds prefer walking over flying and will often tread the exact same pathways back and forth every day when traveling between their favourite feeding spots.

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

What bird is this? 🤔 (See alt text for clue and photo credit) 🌍 #whatbird | #birdsoftheworld | #birds 🦉🐧🦆🦩🦅🪿🦚

A medium-sized bird (36–42 cm / 14–17 in long) perches upright on a leafy branch against a soft, out-of-focus background. It features chestnut-brown wings, a streaked brown and white chest, a long dark tail, a prominent white stripe above its sharp red eye, and a slightly hooked black beak.

Clue: Look closely above my red eye for a striking white stripe and listen for my low, bubbling call echoing across the thickets, savannas, and wetlands of sub-Saharan Africa and the southwestern Arabian Peninsula!

Fun Fact: Unlike most of its kind, which are notorious nest parasites, this species builds its own messy, dome-shaped nest and raises its own chicks—with the male doing most of the egg incubation and chick feeding!

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

@robcrank68.bsky.social (for @alan678.bsky.social - thanks, Rob) says today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is #Ducks&GeeseInFlight.

Here’s a flock of dark bellied Brent Geese taking off from an Essex field:

A flock of black and white geese is flying away from the camera. There are about sixty geese visible in the photo. They are flying up into a grey sky, against a backdrop of distant trees shrouded in mist. There is a strip of green field visible at the very bottom of the picture.

👍 Good point. Looking it up it seems it gets this label because its spread is mostly down to the carelessness of mankind (urban mess and landfill rubbish sites) 😔 We also found reference to ship-assisted migration.

My husband had been feeding the crows where he works, but he missed a few days. This is what he saw today. Out of the 100s of cars on campus, they chose his to dine upon. They brought their own food. I think they’re trying to tell him something. #birds #crows #fowl #wildlife

🪶 Rob has chosen #Green as today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme; any birds or backgrounds that have green in them

Alternative is #Geese, any Goose/Geese will do

- A Song Thrush singing against a green background

#birdphotography
#ECK #birds #birdsofbluesky #naturephotography #ColorADay #GreenSat

A Song Thrush perched on top of a dead Elder tree in song. The bird is slightly left of centre of the shot, in side profile facing right so that’s its right side is visible.
The birds head is slightly raised and its beak is slightly open. The beak is dark with yellow around the ‘lips’ and lower bill. Its face is brown with flecks of creamy white and black throughout. The upper body is a warm brown with darker colouring at the ends of the wing and tail. Its chest is creamy white, turning to white around the legs, and heavily marked with dark, arrow-shaped spots. The legs are a pale, pinkish colour.
The branch it is on comes up from the bottom, slightly left of centre. It branches out into five stubby branches at the top. It is dead and bare of bark with a clump of moss on one branch. The background is a uniform out of focus green.
