The sun hadn’t reached its peak and Severian Lyctor was already berating their newest recruit at his desk for simply turning the heat too high when distilling water. And now the unpurified libation remained impure and, as their esteemed guildmaster said it, “would rather poison their imbiber rather than grant its desired effect.” One would think a guildmaster would treat their freshly-recruited member with grace, but no, not Severian. Whether they’d joined scarcely three bells ago or three moons ago made no difference. Fail to meet his expectations and they’d be cut from the roster.

Aven felt the purr of the engine under him and cranked the throttle a few times just to remind himself of the threshold while they were sitting still. His helmet was secure, and he'd made sure it was the same for Karo, if not moreso, protecting head, soft ears and that body with a set of protective helm, coat and trousers that looked too good, just as everything did on the man. He'd even made sure the detailing was pink, because Karo liked it. Gods, he was a goner, wasn't he?

"We must go." The voice that spoke, suddenly close to her, was Estinien's, and accompanied by a mailed hand on her shoulder. Kneeling down, he lifted the visor on his helmet, and his eyes were surprisingly gentle, considering his normally stoic demeanor. "Come, Bryony. Our work is not yet finished." Even in her sorrow, she marveled at his ability to maintain his composure in the face of such trials.

Bryony shook her head. "I know. But I…I cannot leave him." Estinien considered her for a long moment, then turned away and said something she didn't catch to Aymeric, who bowed his head and rose to leave, supported by Lucia as he limped down the stairs.

"You too, Alphinaud." Estinien's tone brooked no argument, though she doubted Alphinaud would have offered him much of one anyway. "Go back to Fortemps Manor and tell the count what transpired here tonight. He needs to know."
