Good piece by
@annpettifor.bsky.social!
It might help your audience, tho, to explain in broad strokes the mechanisms of 𝘩𝘰𝘸 a government is 'borrowing' from its central bank. It would also circumvent this unfortunate 'money printing'-jargon used by some #MMT folks (via @dbcurren.bsky.social):

(1/5) Stop pretending full employment and price stability are enemies. A Job Guarantee makes them work together: public employment at a living wage anchors the wage floor and absorbs the labour buffer. Both outcomes, same policy.

The framing assumes joblessness is a moral failure needing punishment. Wrong. Long-term unemployment is what happens when a currency issuer chooses not to offer work. Spend on a Job Guarantee instead of means-testing misery.

Money can be owned. Assets can be owned. Accounts can be owned.
But who owns the atmosphere, biodiversity, or the Earth's atoms?
A reflection on ownership, stewardship, and common assets.

Can planetary boundaries be reduced to a monetary value?
Or should ecology remain an independent scientific constraint that economics must respect rather than price?
That's the question at the heart of this piece.

Paramedic training places sat empty at Guy's Campus while Micah waited for a chance to fill them. The facilities existed. The instructors existed. The students existed. Westminster decided the money didn't. That was a choice, not a fact.

Stop framing austerity as inflation control. Real inflation comes from resource shortages and price shocks, not spending. Austerity kills demand and jobs without fixing either. Manage inflation by securing resources, capping prices where needed, and investing in supply.

The real constraint isn't the £233m pot. It's that the government chose to make it a scramble instead of a guarantee. Currency issuer, not lottery operator.

You imply that the tax and NI take pays for government spending including pensions. That's not how government finance works. All government spending is new money issued by the BoE. Tax has other purposes, but does not pay for government spending.

@dave161256.bsky.socialSep 23, 2026, 7:24 AM

Mike's response is not very polite but it is correct. We are constantly told that the government can't afford the things we need. That is always a lie told by neoliberals that always want ever increasing austerity.
#MMT

@dave161256.bsky.socialSep 23, 2026, 7:21 AM

The problem here is the false idea that the government has a limited amount of money to spend. That is a lie told by neoliberals to justify the ever increasing austerity that they choose. It is never an economic necessity.
#MMT

@dave161256.bsky.socialSep 23, 2026, 7:17 AM

The UK government creates £s every time it spends. It is not possible for the government to be short of money. The lie that the government has to impose austerity on the population is a neoliberal lie not an economic necessity.

Abolish pensions, cut taxes £75bn, and hand newborns investment accounts? That's not radical. It's the opposite: it's a currency user's fantasy. The real question is whether the government chooses to provide retirement security or not.

"One bad decision could derail devolution" assumes the constraint is competence, not cash. Real question: will Westminster actually fund regional ambition, or manufacture scarcity and blame the mayors for it?
